The Samick Club

Yeah I'm a bit of samick fan myself, I started on one and have the occassion many times to play some of the high end sam's and I gotta say they blow most of the competition in the low to-mid price away, hell the walnut beastie even managed to sound like a pro bass. So as you can expect I'm on the market for another samick bass, currently I own an artist series and I'm looking at either a saher(saker?) or a gregg bennet corsair 5, w active pup's. My only prob is I can't find any frickin info at all on the saker bass, it has a straight through headstock which is not very common but I can't seem to track any info down at all. Also it's in a crazy blue/green finish which I am a bit iffy about.

does anyone know about this bass? and what's up with the finish, is it blue, or green or does it switch to both.. I can't tell.

I figure either the corsair or the saker will do but I just need to know what has the better spec etc, any help here would be cool. cheers

Oh I can join this one! My first bass is a Sunburst Fairlane. I loved it, then went to a music store to get some strings. I played some "higher-end" basses for the first time (Warwicks, Trabens, a Gibson T-bird) and thought I realized how "low-end" my bass was. Then while I had the strings off I gave it a proper set-up, and once the new strings were broken in, and ever since, I've loved this bass more than others costing double or more (it was $200 Canadian new) - my school band's MIJ Fender J-bass I've played many, many times has NOTHING on this little gem IMO. :smug:
So, what's my number? :)

After my Sunburst Jazz Bass was stolen from a friend's house, my wife got me a Corsair to get back into playing bass. I didn't really play it much because the amp I got with the bass (my nice amp was stolen with the Jazz Bass) was so crappy, the Corsair didn't sound good. Just this week, I finally got a decent amp along with a G&L SB-2, and after playing the SB-2 and falling in love with playing bass again, I plugged in the Corsair on a whim. I was surprised with how smooth and nice it was to play, and how nice the tones were. The strings on it are old and corroded (will replace them Monday), but still quite nice. I was thinking it was a junker until I played it on the new amp. I'm going to put some time and effort into cleaning it up and maybe even getting a pre-amp put into it.

Quite a nice bass for the money. My wife got mine used for me for about $50, but it plays like a much more expensive bass.

After practice tonight, I was looking around our rehersal space, and noticed a bass case on top of a shelf. I asked my guitarist what it was, and he said it was his brother's (our keyboard player) old bass. Apparently he played bass a long time ago. I asked if I could check it out and he said I could.

He thought it was a "Lamick," but I'm pretty sure it says "Samick." The logo on the headstock is in cursive, and is a little confusing, but I'm almost positive it's a Samick. It's a jazz bass copy, probably a 70's era (due to having a thumbrest). I plugged it in to my amp and I was blown away! The tone was incredible. It hadn't been played for years, and the strings were nasty, but you could tell the bass had real potential. I wish I had taken a couple pics with my phone...but it basically just looks like a jazz. Anyway, I thought I'd share this with you guys. I'll add more pics and info the next time I head over there for practice.

my Keyboard player went to a Tax sale at a Pawn Shop (Somehow they amassed over 800,000 in back taxes to the IRS) and they liquidated the entire store. Bought a Samick 5 string bass for I believe 40 bucks. What I remember playing of it, it had the punchiest tone I've ever heard from a bass, but then again, the pups were high, and the strings low. So that probably helped. I'll have to give it a whirl this week and see what model it was.

This little unit has crept into my search for a low-cost, usable five-string;

The Cr 15. Samick and Dean are the only two bass lines my little high-school marching band music store carry.

I also own a Greg Bennet Fairlane, it's the jazz and if you higher the p'ups, the output of this bass is just amazing, I play it through a Hartke B200 20 Watt amp and with this bass it makes my whole room shake with amp volume at 4 :P. plus, I also own a Squier VM p, since I wanted a P, but I have to say the finish of the samick is better (i.e. screws that look like a drunk put them in)

I've got a mid 90's Samick Valley Arts 4 string bass P/J config with active pups. Its one of the nicer basses that Samick made. I've only seen 2 of them ever including mine (except for some random 5/6 strings). Greenish blue transparent finish over either alder or ash body w/ maple neck and black headstock. Electronics leave something to be desired but it plays as well as most fenders I've used.

No idea as to actual value, I paid like 350-400 new, way back when, but heres the serial number if anyone tracks these:

I used to have a Greg Bennett Ultramatic bass that looked,played and sounded incredible,unfortunately it ate a 9volt every 4 days.Samick basically dropped the ball when I tried to use the lifetime warranty it came with.They told me it was discontinued and there were no parts available to replace the preamp in it.Luckily the store refunded my money.But I gotta tell you,when it worked it really was a sweet bass.
