It may be considered blasphemy in this forum, but I agree with P. Bass. Look into Pino Palladino. He's a BG player, but he has great groove.

as much as people talk about placing each note on top of or behind the beat etc, i'm surprised the other half of groove doesn't get mentioned too often - note length. you may be putting everything right where it goes, but it won't bounce until you get as specific with the end of each note as you are with the beginning. accents and note lengths ARE the groove if you ask me.
Oh man, Eric.... that's nuts. It would be fun to run about a half hour of familiar tunes through that, without saying anything, at a typical morning after at any frat house. "Whoa... think I drank too much".

BG player aside - I can't resist this topic.
PS: Moving to your side of the fence for a moment - I recently read a Jazz BG player's story of him asking a great Jazz drummer why, in his opinion, he wasn't accepted as readily in the Jazz gigging circles like his upright brothers & was told that "...a BG just can't SWING". I'm not a jazz player but the drummer has a valid point.
Right? I found it both mildly amusing and deeply troubling.
Certainly drives home the point about the triplet continuum beneath the "swinging eighth;" at least one interpretation of one type of very square eighth. Now we need a program to make the harmonies interesting...
