THE SHORT SCALE BASS THREAD!

Wow--that's a great collection! What's your favorite?

Right now it's a tie between the Truetone and the Kay. The Truetone is really set-up well (Thanks Lakland!). The speed bump pup has low output, so I boost the input pad, and the arrangement results in a tremendous amount of dynamics. You can just keep digging in, and it gets louder and louder. 'Sounds great using a fat pick (V-Picks "Extremely Large") with palm muting. I am really digging this bass. The Kay Jazz Special Reissue is pretty dang cool too. Looks alone make this bass first class. It gets a great double bass sound. 31" scale!?! The really narrow neck takes a little getting used too. Both basses are super-cool! I dig them both.

Band practice last night. When it's just three of us: guitar, bass, and drums, the Allen Woody is a great choice. It takes up a LOT of space in the mix.

I just recently tried a U-bass. Was awesome, but at the same time very weird. I saw it in a local music shop and tried it out. Had pasticy strings (like flats but made of plastic. I had a blast wanking on it. Would I buy one? not likely. I like the Lakland Skyline short scales. Would love one of those. The U-Bass just wasn't for me.

Who made your violin bass? It looks like a Hofner Ignition. If so, can you tell me about the modded control panel?

Good eye, it is an Icon, same difference. It's Black Cherry Red, a limited run they did in several colors some years back. I made the modified control panel, V-V-T, myself. I just like it much better than the usual Hofner rig which I don't find very useful. I set it aside. I also changed the tuners from the wimpy buttons to lightweight Grover type. I'm also one of the few who likes rounds on a violin type bass. It'll thump or bite, if you dial it in right.

Nice--I was wondering about that color! I'm thinking of a control panel mod, too. What value capacitor did you put on your tone control? And did you use 250k or 500k pots?

It has a Fender precision decal on the headstock indeed. But I'm quite sure it's nothing todo with fender, as I bought it very cheap ($100). I think it's a local made bass. Quality is not good, but it's a good size for my son to practice

If it's the Precision Bass Jr, 28" scale, it coul be worth $300-500. These typically have only one knob for volume, although a few were made/modded with a tone knob. (old cg ad attached).
