Circa 1990...electrolytics have a shelf life of about 10-15 years...they were all original so I figured it'd be better to change them before they go and take something else with them.
Have my first gig tonight since the middle of last year... Not a serious thing, sort of a one-off resurrection of the noise/rock/performance art/chaos ensemble (Uberkunst) I've played with off and on for several years, sometimes on bass, sometimes on guitar. We haven't done a show in ages and probably won't do another one again unless circumstances are extraordinary. Anyway, I'll either be playing my Hellcat VI or my Barracuda (the three ProSteel strings arrived and if I have enough time to install them on the Barracuda and intonate the beast before the show tonight, then I will use it). Uberkunst is more of a spectacle to witness firsthand than it is to listen to, but I plan to record it with my Zoom H2. If you can imagine a lo-fi, tongue-in-cheek combination of Gwar, Crash Worship, and early Einsturzende Neubauten, then you might have an idea of what we're like. The core band members have had a total of two practices to prepare, and the other members have had none, so it is likely to be a complete chaotic noise racket. But I'll be playing through my VT Bass pedal live for the first time, with no other effects (except a little slapback at the very end of one song).
Hehehee our set was a total train wreck. No sound check, not even a level check to make sure the bass and guitar amps were loud enough... We couldn't really hear each other, I tried going by the vocals to gauge tempo etc. The crowd loved us (our appeal is more visual than sonic), although I didn't get to see all the insanity of the stage antics from the rather large non-musical part of the group (I wish someone had video taped it, I am always too busy on bass to watch the chaos out front)... There was lots of smashing of metal filing cabinets, fake blood everywhere, crazy costumes, a large debris field, and even some fireworks set off on a couple members... Big fun....
Well semi hollow anyway...that's the only currently produced model I'm aware of.
Any word on when the LaBella Hellcat VI flats will be available for general purchase? I am very eager to try them out!!!

Not that I really have any money burning a hole in my pocket right now...picked up a lot of a decent recording gear used at a non-ignorable price over the last few weeks...
I think I found a mic that might sound great for recording bass VI through an amp though...

I sent off an e-mail to Eric at La Bella, and he replied that he is currently in the process of building up some inventory of the flats, nickel, and stainless roundwounds, and that he will be sure to send out a press release once he has completed the strings.
This makes me happy! There will be a supply of fresh strings to go to when we need them. However, my experience with La Bella flats is that a set of them survives indefinitely once you put them on a bass. Not sure when if ever I'd need a new set once I get the first one! I guess an accident could always happen and a string could break someday.

If one does a lot of iron-gripped note-bending then the .026 E string can be repeatedly pushed down in between the frets causing little ridges to form in the string portion which hovers over the frets.

I guess from now on I'll keep my pyrotechnics at home...
I hate going to crowded shows and certainly don't attend shows with pyro stuff... Almost every show I go to is a reminder as to why I hate going to shows (mainly...d-bags, bad sound, crappy openers..). Add all those reasons to getting stiffed by promoters and that's why I hate playing out most of the time. Not that it's a big concern of mine right now anyway because I'm on hiatus from playing in a band anyway for at least the next year.
