The short scale thread!

Send a PM to "SBassman" ... he's one of the resident short scale lovers on TB.

Present! :)

Don't have any pics handy, but:

- I gigged with Essex Jazz Short Scales for some time.
[replaced the tuners and pickups] Excellent, excellent deals, nice and light, but very good tone.

- Mustangs are good

- Broncos are better left at the store

- In the custom world, Landing Short Scales are fantastic

Thats funny! I was just thinking about a 32" scale tuned E-E like a bass VI with a narrow neck and all. I would like the tuners to be full size so you could use 105 to 25 gauge strings.
yeah, i used to be obsessed with the fender bass VI type basses, and i still am to a certain extent, just not as much as before...fortunatly i play with a guitar player who dabbles in bass, and has given me the opportunity to play both a bassVI type instrument (the dano longhorn bass VI)(and also the baritone jag at a guitar store) and a regular 6 string bass (brice HXB-406 tuned EADGCF) and i found that the brice was more comfortable for me to play, so my next bass will be a medium scale 6'er E-F , kinda a best of both worlds thing :)

Sounds like you're on to something really neat here. Who's going to build your future bass?

If you haven't decided, consider one like this custom Status Electro-3, made for Jonas Helllborg:

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

It has a 32.5" scale, 26 frets, a magnetic pickup close to the bridge for a tight sound, piezos in the bridge, and it's tuned E-e. I dare not think about how much one is, as I could probably never afford one. Modern basses don't get much cooler than that, if you ask me, and I'd really like to take one for a test drive one day.

thats a nice bass :)

but i actually have made my decision, tb's hambone is making it (check the link in my sig to his site) it's going to be pretty cool, and i a very familiar with his work, as i own hambone fairlane #0005 (in the gallery page one in that link). he really knows his stuff!

Actually, from being somewhat familiar with your posting history, I would have been surprised if anyone else but Hambone were to build your future bass. :)

And yes, he really seems to know how to build a great bass, so I look forward to seeing the finished instrument. Is it going to be Jaguar/Bass VI-styled, or something completely different? And when is it due?

lol i believe that i have said some good things about hambone in the past ;) i am just really happy with the finished product, and i still admire how i was so stupid when it came to all the woods and various other options, and he took the time to explain every detail, and i was a TB newbie at that point so he really went out on a limb (imo) for me, and i am grateful :)

anyways, it won't be a bass VI instrument, although they most undoubtedly are awesome, i am not a rich man and can only afford 1-2 basses at this point, so this is going to be kind of a Do-All bass for me and my looping.
when is it due? i dunno...i haven't placed the order yet because we are still ironing out the details, but i hope to raise a good chunk of that money this summer with my job and selling some unnecessery gear (as if there was such a thing ;)) so i can get the order in before september :)

and so far we have some details for sure, it'll be a 6'er E-F, 32" scale, walnut body, pau ferro fretboard, u-retro pre...thats the most of it :)

SX shortscales rule!

Time to bring this thread back from oblivion. I have a soft spot for shortscales !!!!
I own a few, from 30 to 33 inches. Many won't consider 33 as being a shortscale... damn, many don't consider 32 a short scale either !
I'd say anything below 34 fits the bill.
Here is my latest, a 32" CB 6 string strung B-C. It KILLS, period.

Posted this over in the "Short scale Bass thread", but sionce someone started a rogue shortscale thread, will ask here too...

My short scale Lo Ryder was sounding a little anemic, a little thin without the punch I am looking for... I replaced the tuners, and am putting new pickups in it. I am thinking some thicker strings might help... does that sound reasonable? It is a short scale with tune-o-matic type bridge and a string through body... Any suggestions?

Changing strings can certainly make a difference, but changing your pickups is the change that will make the biggest difference. What pickups are you dropping in?

Cheers,
TC

Dropping a couplea these in: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_pickups/Pickups:_Bass/4/EMG_Select_Bass_Pickups.html

It had those cheap "humbuckers" that were the same size n shape as those in my Epi Viola, but I would not change the ones in my Epi for anything... I LOVE that sound... they look the same, but who knows what they were like on the inside... I am gonna put the old strings back on to compare to the old sound, but since I am a relative newb, thought maybe I would see what some thicker strings might do too (I am not sure what is on there now, but they are rounds and are thinner than the TI flats on my Epi... I want to stick with rounds, cause I want a different sound than the Epi (man, I LOVE the way it sounds) so I have some contrast for playing the more "rock n roll-y" stuff...

I'm just as curious about what pickups you're taking out. I agree - the pickups will be a bigger difference than the strings will.

never mind - you just answered it ahead of me.
