The short scale thread!

I'm just as curious about what pickups you're taking out. I agree - the pickups will be a bigger difference than the strings will.

never mind - you just answered it ahead of me.

Yeah... whoknowswhomade'em chinese "humbuckers" as they are listed on the manufacturer's site... Probably toss em up on Craigslist for a few bucks in case someone wants em for a project...

I know the pickups will make a BIG difference... just kinda thinking out loud about the strings... I like this bass and want a better sound out of it til I can get my Birdsong;).

Aww hell.....I have to jump in this one!!
I'll post up pics of my 65 Hofner Club Bass when I get home.

That thing has more a$$ than a county sheriff's van full of hookers.
I play that thing and I wonder why I need to have a five string to go low!

Ok... while I am at it, I will go ahead and post the family...

Left to right:

Applause AE 40 shortscale, ZZ Ryder Lo Ryder (affectionately dubbed the "Anti-Beatle") and my Epiphone Viola (My number one bass)... Still to come: a Birdsong!

My short scale Lo Ryder was sounding a little anemic, a little thin without the punch I am looking for... I replaced the tuners, and am putting new pickups in it.
They look guitar HB sized. Two suggestions: Lawrence EB50's (I beleive he makes them on request, mine are secondhand) or Dimarzio X2N.

Nope... the pickups in these chinese basses are slightly different sized than the traditional humbucker - a little shorter longways and a little narrower crossways, if you follow that gobbledygook - (same size as the HBs in the Viola bass... not sure about the other beatle-clones), so I had to do some routing and had a fellow TBer cut me some new pickup rings... I am picking them up tonight so hopefully I will be able to get it back together over the next day or 2 to try em out...
