Hi all,

I've gotten around to recording some videos of me playing a couple of my solo arrangements, and uploaded them to You Tube.

The Simpsons Theme:


The Jazz Medley is 'My Funny Valentine', ' Serenade To A Cuckoo', 'Take The A Train', and 'St. Thomas'.

As some of you know, I'm hoping to get these pieces and a load more into a book later in the year - copyright permissions pending! I'll keep you all posted on that, but in the meantime, enjoy the vids and let me know what you think.

Thanks Muss. I went for as much of a bass guitar sound as I could with a piece like this. Some players would probably have played this on a tenor bass or something like that, but my aim with all the solo pieces I do is to make them work on the standard 4-string bass. If I'd added more low end (to make it more bass-like) the notes would have been too indistinct. With pieces like this you don't want too much low end, and a healthy dose of reverb/little bit of delay makes a real difference. At the end of the day, it's a solo piece, so I don't feel too tied to sounding like a traditional bass player.

Anyway, that's some kind of explanation I guess!

Xanthyr, my bass is a GB Rumour bass, built by Bernie Goodfellow in the UK. Stunning basses, great tones. It also has fretboard LED's, but they were too much for the video!

oh well here we go this is the first time i've actually come on a forum site and done this but man stuart im wondering if you have ripped a guy off on you tube his video has been up there for a while now and you play it exactly the same as him here check him out

I dont think its fair for you to accuse somone of "ripping" something off during your first month of being a member.Not having ago just a little advice if you dont wanna get flamed lol.
But if you notice Stuarts does differ from the other video and has alot more intricacy, he also does not use the slap technique in his video. Welcome Craig btw. Sorry If I came across harsh I didnt realise that was your first post.

Uh, no.

Just because the technique is similar doesn't make it the same.

Thanks for your comments, but I'm afraid you're incorrect: I have not ripped that guy off, since I have never seen that video before. Whilst that guy has certainly done a nice arrangement (which needs a little tidying up in my opinion), mine is significantly different. I suggest you watch both videos again - they are in fact completely different and no two parts are performed the same in either.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but I do not like to be accused of ripping someone off.

Hi all,

Sorry I haven't been around to post for so long, but I thought I'd just offer up an update as to the progress of the Solo Arrangements book. I have actually written a lot of it, conducted interviews with some great players etc, but have run into a lot of problems securing the appropriate copyright permissions to use the songs. A case in point is 'The Simpsons' theme tune. The copyright owners, Hal Leonard, were not keen at all to let me use it (on the grounds that the book might actually be successful it seems), but have since agreed to let me have permission providing the book is only distributed in the limited territory of the UK and Europe. I am encountering similar problems for some of the other songs, but fingers crossed I think it will be ok. I'm now aiming for a March 2009 release, which is annoying both for me and the people who have been waiting for it. Oh well!

In more positive news, as 'The Jazz Medley' (see top of thread for video) has been flatly rejected for publication I'll be posting it on the Bassline Publishing site as a free download very soon - sheet music, performance notes and audio.

I'll update as and when i can!
