Awesome guys! LOVE'N the feedback for sure... now for some meta feedback!

TC Electronic BG250 needs to be added to the list. Cant Help myself because I am blown away by this little beauty. No idea what it weighs in pounds (only talk about punds for fish if your an old man in OZ) but it is light as a feather and shakes the rafters delivered incredibly smoothly.

I think there's something to this... but in the BG800! YES light, YES 800W, YES on price! Good call... move up the chain.

80% of my playing is done through a Gallien Krueger MB210-II. I can't say enough good things about it, it's crazy loud for its size and weight (38 pounds, if I'm not mistaken), has a great deal of usable tone-shaping, and is ultra-portable. It sounds like a GK, pretty clean but with a lot of balls if you want to dial it in. It has a defeatable tweeter (I prefer it off, and I like a punchy, fairly bright tone), and I think it puts 350 watts through the internal speakers (don't quote me, I could be wrong) and definitely puts out 500 if you have an extension cabinet. It's been more than I've needed in any jam/gig situation thus far, and I think I gave 600 bucks for it new. They also make a 1x15" variant if that's your thing, and a 2x12" that delivers all 500 without an extension. I think you should give one a listen, they sound like what you're after.

The MB210-II must be a great one For power to price / quality ratio it might be at the top. (I had the MB II 1x10 and 1x12 [and Fusion 550 for that matter] being 100 and 200 watts respectively with all the power going to the one speaker, no parallel non-powered cabs. I loved them both, the 10 was great for practice room, or acoustic guitar combo jam and was only 21 lbs. But it wasn't a solution for any other "venue." As it got MURDERED by anyone playing an electric guitar. The 12 was awesome and it was a fair price. The tone was all GK which was good, and it had fair power. It was 36ish lbs and a little bulky as a 15 inch square ,I didn't like to carry it and it was slightly under powered in some instances.)

I played a friend of mine's fretless acoustic through a Phil Jones briefcase once with my oldtime string band (my upright didn't actually belong to me and was in use elsewhere), if it hadn't been for that I would've had to play mandolin/foot stomp, and my harmony singing would've gone right out the window. Those things are the trooph, and battery powered and everything, but (if I'm not mistaken) a bit out of the OP's designated price range.

Ok so this MIGHT really already be the answer in a cab. I have the PJ C4 lite.... it's 4, 5 inch speakers in a roughly one foot square, is 400 watts RMS and only weights in at 21 lbs. This is why the GKs are no more. With my 300 watt MB Nano on top it doesn't weight much more then the GK MB 10. The kicker is when I put it on top of my MB 121 12 inch and have 300 watts over one 12 and 4x5's... HEAVEN.... Now I just need an 800 to 1000 watt head to run them both at MAX (and to have a backup!)

It's kinda interesting to see how far things have evolved since the 2006 though. My answer back then probably would have been a GK MB150 or a Mesa Walkabout. Then the Genz Benz Shuttle series came along. Hands down for me now it's the Markbass Mini CMD 121P and Traynor is moving an interesting direction with the super micro SB106.

MB is the right at the top for both head and cab!! .... but NO ONE can touch the 21lbs 400watt PJ C4 when it comes to power/portability for me yet.....

Unfortunately Genz Benz is yet another line acquired and killed by the rocket scientists at Fender. GB Shuttles do come up used though and in general seem to be priced fairly and well looked after. While there are quite a few 1x12 combos and cabs out there that stack up against the 12" Shuttle stuff I can't think of any light weight 10" combo that's as gig worthy as the Shuttle 6.0 10T.

Carvin all the way, so many amps and speaker to choose, and for the Bass player on a budget you can't beat Carvin

I've heard the Mesa Walkabout Scout is the baddest little dude on the block. Never tried one though.

I have one and they are right. The drawbacks are expense (although a used one might be reasonable--new they are $1200 or so) and awkward carrying. It's not particularly heavy (45ish pounds) but the shape--almost a cube--makes it a tad difficult due to the handle being away from your body.

Plus 1 for Carvin...I run a b1000 head and an mb15 and I have a great sound.

Boring suggestions I know, but the Rumble 500, BA210, and GK MB210 are all light, loud, will all fit in the trunk of a Honda Accord, and are all readily available
