+1 on the pickups. This is one of the best kept secrets - Ibanez pickups are amazing.

Here I am with my recently acquired GSR206. Always skeptical of low priced basses, but I really like this one. The bridge is better than I imagined it could be and the pickups sound good and the bass boost is pretty useful. The neck is almost perfect for my standards. I haven't play many Ibanez basses, but that could be changing!

+1 Ibanez pickups sound outstanding.

Especially impressed with the newer CAP line of pickups of the last couple of years. They've been putting various CAP-models of all shapes & sizes (single sized humbucker, dual coil humbuckers, and triple coil humbuckers) in all sorts of models - from the 300 models on up through their top tier Groovelines, ATK Premiums, etc. Amazing sounding pickups - I removed the stock Bartolini MK-1 pickups in favor of Ibanez' own CAP EFX (Extended Frequency) pickups in my SR705. Great tones!

My roommate is selling me her Ibanez SR300. It is one of the older ones with the contour control and only 4 knobs. I really love the bass, but I hate the contour knob. In a band situation it serves no purpose but to lose yourself in the mix.

I do love the pickups on it, though. I am going to install my old preamp from my 2007 Prestige and keep the pickups. I think that will improve the quality of the bass. If I'm not mistaken, it also has the CAP pickups which I never really gave much thought to until this thread. I am really starting to become an Ibanez convert.

What I REALLY love is the design. The top loader slanted input jack is the ONLY bass I've ever owned that allows me to put the bass down during rehearsal breaks and I never have to worry about the input jack or cord breaking off. That extra thought is what makes Ibanez top shelf.

I've often read of the love/hate relationship with the Contour knob in the older SR300 models in online reviews. Although I've never tried one of the older models, I'm more of a dedicated mids guy myself - don't really go for the sweep knobs too much. It's always tricky to know what exact frequency you are adjusting as you sweep through. The newer SR300/375 models have the newer preamp with a dedicated mid knob that boosts and cuts and two different frequencies rather than a sweepable midrange.

In any case, I'm thinking the CAP pickups with your 2007 Prestige preamp would be a winning combination. :bassist:

Not sure what you mean by what spacing pups to get ; it seems logical that you'd get the 5 string set for it.

I installed (well had a pro tech do it) a set of Nordy's and a Bartolini NTMB preamp into my SR Prestige. I LOVE it and would never change it back. I also have coil taps so I can get a jazz tone if I want to because of the single coil position option, but if you want just some kick butt jazz Nordy's then I'd go for the Fat Stacks.

Of all the preamps, I really LOVE the Bartolini NTMB. It does what I want it to do and offers a lot. But, the pickups will determine your tone more than the preamp in the relevance of your question.

Also wanted to add that from what I understand, Nordstrand will work with you to make a custom sized pickup casing if they don't already offer it. I'm sure an upcharge would apply, but I don't know how much that might be. You would have to contact them for that info. :cool:

I wanted to ask you guys something - mainly for people who play SR300, SR500 and SR600 (and the 5 string versions of course).

I mostly play sitting down these days - not in a band at the moment so just play at home.

I find that resting my arm on the body of my SR600 gets uncomfortable due to the way the body comes to a kind of point around the edges (what I mean is, it's much thinner around the edges than where the pickups are etc). If I rest my arm there, my fingers go numb, I assume due to squashing a nerve.

Only other way to play it sitting is to lift my elbow so that my wrist is straight and my arm doesn't rest on the bass, but that makes my upper arm and shoulder ache like mad.

I sit with the bass on my right knee (I'm right handed) - have tried the classical guitar position, but can't reach the first frets properly that way.

I find the contoured body of a P or J much more comfortable. But, my SR600 just sounds like nothing else!

Does anyone else find this? If so, how did you get around it, besides just standing up to play? I don't want to do that, not comfortable for me.

I know exactly what your talking about. I find that I can work around this by changing the angle of my right arm a little bit. I usually only have this issue when I've got pretty much the entire weight of my arm resting on the body which is a bad technique anyway because it causes me to have a really strong angle in my wrist, almost 90 degrees, so I just lift up my arm a little bit. This results in less force pushing my arm in the edge of the bass and gives my wrist a more natural angle. I think Scott Devine has a vid on youtube about this, could be wrong though.

Also wanted to post up pics of my hipshot ultralights since I could not find any pics of other sr's with then installed anywhere. These are mountains better than stock. I really hate the stock tuners.

I really wish you hadn't posted those pics. Or more accurately my wallet wishes you hadn't posted those pics. In the near future, I foresee getting a set of those and a matching bridge for my SR505.
