Sorry to jump in - that's kind of what I did with my SR 506 - I don't like the sound of the preamp that much, so set it flat - on my Alembic F-2B used my usual settings, the bass & treble boosted to 4, mids cut to about 6 (2-10-2 is flat) - I've been meaning to post something to soundcloud...
Well, we've all tried different basses and sometimes tone goals change along with new bands or new musical interests. Or sometimes one instrument just really speaks to you. So I say congratulations on your new love. Don't know who the number keeper will be but you can rest assured your thread will continue as there are many who love these basses and many more who will discover them as you have discovered a new interest.
If you talk to a lot of Ibanez owners you'll hear the fast neck and light weight mentioned frequently. They are just amazingly comfortable basses to play. And they have a lot of models to cover different tastes/styles.
One thing that doesn't get mentioned often enough I think is the quality of the instruments - especially the lower price point basses. I've been surprised at how many of them are set up pretty nicely right out of the box. Pick up some other brand's $300 bass and then pick up an Ibanez and more often than not you'll come away impressed with Ibanez.
For me, the SRX is the best cheap bass out there. I'll tip my hat to Squier as well, but I really love my SRXs because they are smaller, lighter and more comfortable to play than a Squier. They can sit in the mix like a Fender (strong in the low mids - not too much sustain - blends with everything) but the active electronics also make it so that it can punch through if needed or get tons of bottom if needed or a very bright top. If I'm going into a situation where I don't know what type of bass I'll need, I'll take the SRX. It's versatile and can cover whatever needs to be done.
The high end models are super nice, but so are a lot of other brands when you get into the bigger bucks. At that point it sometimes becomes a beauty contest and becomes a lot more subjective.
So, thinking of switching out the pickups and/or preamp on my 97 SR406. It's a little too quiet for my liking, I have to dime the on-board preamp to get much volume compared to my other Ibanez basses. Any suggestions? I'm not necessarily looking for anything incredibly high end or boutique, just a good solid preamp/pickup that would solve my problem. I've got a 2004 SR505 and I love the Bartolinis in it, and am thinking of getting the SR506 electronics put in my 406. Would that work? I think the combination of the better electronics and thicker wood of the 406 would give it a nasty growl and sustain. Anyway, thanks for the help as always!

Oh gosh YES. You have to remember that there are lots of different types of music and lots of different types of players.
Listen to Motown and old soul music and try playing that with a bass with lots of sustain. Ugh. Fender basses, especially vintage ones, have far less sustain than the modern sound that is often attributed to neck thru design and higher mass bridges. Plus, in that era even that was considered to ring too long and a foam pad was placed under the strings at the bridge.
Check out this video by one of the very top session guys in Nashville. He plays on everything from R&B to country to rock. Listen to his old P bass at around :40 seconds in.
But at the same time, you wouldn't want that set up for playing metal. Each sound has its place. None is wrong - it's just a matter of preference and there are plenty of people that want each type.
People who play flats and people who play hollow bodies are groups who are not necessarily looking for max sustain.
On the other hand, some rockers couldn't live without sustain.
Lots of different groups out there with different tonal needs.

As I posted above, all the tone controls on the bass are set flat, pickup blend is right in the middle. Alembic F-2B preamp set around 4-6-4 (flat being 2-10-2, so bass & treble boosted a little, mids cut). 100% improvised! Oh yeah, there is some 3Leaf GR2 in the middle...

Should have posted this in here instead of the general Ibanez club really but I didn't see this thread until now. I bought a Soundgear recently but I have no idea which specific model it is. Anyone have any idea? There's no model stamp on the back of the headstock.
Here are my 2 SRs. The 5er is a 405 from 98. I thru EMG's in it. Dual coil in the neck position I think a DC in the bridge. BQS system EQ. I've this bass since I was a teenager. Second 5er I ever owned. First was an Ibanez TR Rieves (had a crap neck). The 6er is SR506 just stock. An ok bass I guess.
I didn't think Ibanez put in separate battery compartments until the mid-2000's. I know my '97 SR406 doesn't have a separate battery compartment. Guess you learn something new everyday!

I was having a buzzing problem with my SR700.
I think I finally figured out what where my buzzing was coming from. There's a slight tilt of the neck. On some of the highest frets, if I press down on the fret, the string will hit the very last fret before it hits the fret I'm actually pressing down on.
I tweaked this by removing the neck and adding a cut up playing card. Anyone else notice similar problems? Is there a more recommended way to fix such a problem?

It could be a "change of seasons" set up thing, but being in Calif. we don't really have seasons
