The Squier Mini Precision Bass Club

Somebody save me all the re-reading of this thread, and school me on the strings.
I'm not interested, out of the gate, in restringing this thing.
Are the stock strings Good Enough for my first few weeks, or, are they bad enough where - you Have to restring to get started properly?

Stock strings are OK. Nothing special, but they definitely don't suck. I think they're Fender 5150 Short Scale?

I changed mine (to Ibanez Mikro strings) because I really don't like having the fat part of the string wrapped around the post, not for any sound issues.

So, the Mikro strings actually worked out with proper lengths? Even the D and G?

What are the gauges of 5150 v.s. the Mikros?

This Bass looks like the perfect as gift for my nephew, he will be three soon.
He already jams out on his uke with my mum every chance he gets, he gets excited when he sees my instruments and loves it even more when I let try and play them.
When his sister was two, I put my real trumpet in her toy box, it didn't take long till she could play some notes and things.
My nephew seems to like my basses the best out of what he has seen, he has had his uke for a while now, time to get the kid a bass.
This little P Bass should be cool, he is quite a tall strong boy so he'll be fine.

The Mikro G string is too short, so I got a single 045 nickel roundwound. The other 3 strings are fine.

As far as gauges go, dunno off the top of my head. IIRC, Mikro strings only come in one gauge.

Also, I don't know that the stock strings are 5150s, it's just a guess.

Do all short scale basses have somewhat floppier string tension or have some manufacturers minimized or eliminated it? If so, how? Who?

Unfortunately, I don't think there has been a whole lot of string innovation for this type of bass.
There Could be, but I don't think we have seen it.

When I first fell down this rabbit hole, for anyone who remembers my Picco Bass times :), I made up the tension difference by essentially stringing with 5 string gauges. The bass was a 25" scale design, using essentially BEAD gauges tuned+ to EADG. That made up the difference.

In this 28" scale world, I don't think anyone has bothered, even though it would be pretty easy to match a string design to the scale that would yield proper tension and tone.

According to what I’ve heard and felt the strings are 45-105. They are the same gauge as the string on my other bass.

Both Volker and ZedLepp - outstanding. :)

I didn't expect to, but I'm bad, and I'm taking the plunge. Just reserved one already in stock at my local store. Will have it tonight or tomorrow. Say some prayers that I get a good one.

[would much rather this thing cost another 100 dollars and have some nearly guaranteed quality, like the Squier VM Jaguar that was a quality Steal at the price they sold it at. Outstanding build.]
My Mini sounds so much better than my Jaguar. No defects, perfect setup, great low low bass tone I love this bass

The strings are Fender 7250m nickel plated steel and FWIW they are pretty good strings. I contacted a Sweetwater Rep. They checked it out and confirmed it. Cheers.

Stock strings are fine. I prefer flats, but these will get me through a few months until I change them.
Chromes will fit, but the E string will have the fatter part of the string on the tuning post rather than the silk. Some people are bothered by that, but I have zero concerns.

Once again, on strings for the Squier Mini P...

First off, the butt to nut length on the Mini P is 76 cm/30". The center of the E tuner is 4 cm/1.5" past the nut. The "perfect fitting" string would have a 31.5" to 32" ball to taper length. Almost all short scale strings are 34" ball to taper.

If you don't mind having the fat part of the string wrap around the E tuner post, any short scale strings will fit. There is no technical reason I'm aware of against doing this.

If you're like me, and insist on having taper only on the tuner post, the only strings I've found that fit are Ibanez Mikro strings. Except the G, which is too short, and only winds 3/4 of the way... The Mikro G string is 045. so you'll have to find a single 045 nickel roundwound. You can use a 040 or 050, I suppose.

I have not yet tried a Mikro 5er set. I believe that the lower 4 would fit properly, and could be used as is to make a Mini P BEAD bass, but don't know this for sure.

How about higher tension fender pure nickel 7150XL 40-95 ? The current made by Daddario are pretty stiff compare to earlier fender mexico made.

On my personal opinion, smaller gauge on E string has better tone clarity and less bommy muddy.
