It sounds like The Empty Cell finds the Squier Mini worth the work to install new pickups, instaLL A NEW PICKGUARD AND MODIFY THE BODY for through body strings. I think this is high praise for the basic neck and body design to deserve this much work. As I noted above, for me the bass as it came out of the box fabulous enough to be my best sounding bass stock. Actually for me a white pickguard looks great.

The tuners are better on the Squier and the pickups are a bit hotter. Tone wise they are about the same for the most part and both are dead quiet when not playing. On the Squier the tone knob offers a fair bit of variety, while on the Turser it is for the most part there for decoration.
The body on the Turser is not only a bit wider and longer, it is also noticeably deeper. Despite that it is over a pound lighter than the Squier Mini, coming in at exactly 5 lbs, while the Squier is just over 6 lbs. The Turser has some neck dive due to the 30" scale, long headstock and light body, but the whole bass is so light it's not much of a bother. The Squier is very well balanced overall.
The biggest difference between the two Mini Ps is the neck. The Squier being 28.6" and the Turser a full 30". The neck width difference is also huge, with the Squier at 1-1/2" and the Turser at 1-5/8. It's a huge difference... the Turser neck feels like a Precision Bass neck and the Squier feels like a Jazz.
Overall I really notice the difference in size between the two basses. I can't lie: overall I prefer the Turser due to the 30" scale, wider neck and larger body. The better tuners and slightly hotter pickups don't quite make up for the very small size of the Squier Mini P. They're both good basses, but the Turser fits my adult-sized body better.
Of course things can change. I've been playing Turser Junior Precisions for several years, so I'm really used to them. The Squier Mini Precision isn't going anywhere

Based Mako Man's measurements my best guess is that Squier used the neck design from the SS Jaguar Bass for the Mini-------the Jaguar neck feels very much like a Jazz Bass neck

It's great to hear impressions from playing with a band. I really won't be able to judge my Mini properly until I play it with the band under our normal practice settings.
And I'll bet your back liked it too!! :D

I actually do find the neck to feel a lot like the SS Jag. The Mini neck is a bit more rounded and I think a bit thicker than I remember my Jag... more of a C shape. However because it is shorter than the Jag, the overall feel is about the same. The Jag neck was a bit thin overall for me and the Mini is too. However lots of people love a nice thin, fast neck and I think the size of the neck fits the overall size of the guitar.
I think this is the perfect bass for a young player, a great recording bass and a definite gigging bass for adults who like that smaller size. That said, I'd love to see a Squier P-Bass Junior with a full 30" scale, P-Bass width neck and slightly larger body for us old fat guys LOL!

I am totally with you, I think a P Bass Jr with 30 inch neck P bass Width neck and a slightly larger body would be great. Even a Mustang Bass with P Bass pickups would be great.

Don't get me wrong, it sounds great stock. But I should mention that I got mine at a reduced price due to some issues with order processing. Even if I'd paid full price I'd still put the money into it as it feels like a solid base for modding, and it's not like you can easily find parts for a super-short-scale bass.

I grabbed one of these recently and am digging it as a portable bass to use with my battery/PJ D4 amp. Plays great and definitely has the P-bass sound. This is also my only fretted bass, and with the roundwounds the zing is a bit over the top for me haha. A little more tension would be nice too. Looking at grabbing some ferrules and drilling to use short scale flats.

Could the bend into/through the body damage flatwounds? Not sure if anyone has had any problems using flats on a P Bass Jr (which is string through body stock I believe)...

Might not work with LaBella Deep Talkin Flats (they advise against it), but maybe their low tension flats will. My P-Bass Jr has D'Addario Chromes on it, and they work just fine, though the E string has about 1/4 turn of winding on the tuner post

I just got a black Mini P from Guitar Center. When I ordered it GC showed it as an in stock item. A few days after ordering, I get an email from the GC in Lubbock, TX telling me that the Mini P that I ordered was a clearance item and that they had the last one in stock. He offered it to me for $149 and included photos. It was a display in his store. Photos looked good so I said OK. Picked it up from my local GC (along with a new Gretsch Junior Jet) yesterday. Looks brand new and in perfect condition. I got a $30 discount, but GC is still showing it as an in stock item. I find this confusing.

I really like this Mini P. Got some Dunlop Flats coming in to put on it. With the Mini P and the Gretsch, this makes 7 short scales in my collection.

Both Volker and ZedLepp - outstanding. :)

I didn't expect to, but I'm bad, and I'm taking the plunge. Just reserved one already in stock at my local store. Will have it tonight or tomorrow. Say some prayers that I get a good one.

[would much rather this thing cost another 100 dollars and have some nearly guaranteed quality, like the Squier VM Jaguar that was a quality Steal at the price they sold it at. Outstanding build.]
