Where would modern sci fi be without the trailblazing commitment to reminding us that diversity is the most important concept one could ever conceive and explore. Exploration? Science? Pfft. No one wants to see that. The audience demands inspiration monologues about the triumph of the human or alien spirit. Scientific accuracy or internal logic be damned. Come up with a galaxy ending threat and let the most unqualified people solve it because they're each beautiful and unique and special.
