Not really. The original series put non white people in important roles and that was progressive for the time. TNG had a moderately diverse crew but still had white male captain. They let a black guy star in DS9, but he wasn't even captain at first. Voyager finally got a lady, but a white one. Then back to white male with enterprise. The JJ monstrosities weren't particularly woke till they made a character gay because the actor happened to be. It wasn't till Alex Kurtzman trek that it truly became woke and has continued on since.
Who knows what it means. Diversity exists but it happens naturally. Tolerance of any and all concepts and personalities and ideas is an unrealistic standard, maybe. Woke TV is forced and unrealistic in your face diversity and love and togetherness that's daring you to accuse it of appearing anything other than natural and beautiful and if you even notice that something seems odd it's because you're a racist and patriarchal piece of ****.
I gave it about 20 minutes until the obese Jem Hadar/Klingon hybrid woman started screaming at the antagonist as Holly Hunter laughed. I shan't be watching more.
Roku has a free 'first episode only' available and I watched it last night. I always have hope for new Star Trek stuff 'cause I'm an old geek that watched each new episode of the original series way back when.
Holy Guacamole, Academy was bad. I'm assuming this was intentionally meant as a teen or young person drama, complete with current cultural norms, language and attitudes. The ship design of Athena, interior and exterior, was just way overdone and sad. And that overwrought ending using the song San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair) was pathetic.
But, I shouldn't be totally negative. Some of the special effects shots were cool.
I watched it until the end, 'cause it was kinda funny in a sad way. Maybe the show will strike a chord with young folk, but I really hope they have better taste and sensibilities than to stay with this offering.
I hope this is the end. I don't know why they keep letting Alex Kurtzman make shows. Star Trek ended 5/13/05 with the last episode of Enterprise. Then JJ Abrams defiled its corpse. Then Alex Kurtzman dug it up again and did unspeakable things to it's already defiled corpse. Let it rest for ****'s sake. It's over. 1965-2005. It had a good run. Leave it be.
Yeah, I'm beginning to agree with you. Although there are parts of Picard, Lower Decks, and Strange New Worlds I enjoyed, the rest is not worth the celluloid it's printed on.
I've never seen more than a few minutes of Lower Decks. I hear it's the least offensive of Kurtzman's atrocities. Picard was 99% awful. The fan service stuff they did with the TNG cast and the Enterprise D was okay at best. The story still sucked. Strange New Worlds had a couple of non awful moments, but none were memorable. It's all just so bad.
I think a remake, of the reboot, of the sequel (post prequel, of course) would really accentuate the creativity, of those who lack it.
I can watch TOS, all day long. Wrath Of Khan was my favorite on the big screen. The rest of the series/movies?

I have Pluto TV playing TOS or TNG playing all day, every day. My husband tolerates it, fortunately.

I watched Episode 3. Can't say I was paying any meaningful attention to the incomprehensible student mayhem, just to fan service easter eggs such as the memorial wall. Which by the way has a Kurtzman name. Frieda Kurtzman or Cruella Kurtzman or something like that.
I made it through 1.5 episodes. It was pretty bad.
I don’t care much if it’s woke or not woke, I want interesting characters that are well written and well acted, I want entertaining stories. Not lazy writing.
I have seen shows where I am on board with the message ( political, social, theological, whatever), but didn’t like it because it was not good story tell8ng o4 world building or entertaining.

I think the problem for me with the Academy is that I don't really care about any of the characters. We cared about Spock, McCoy, Kirk; Picard, Data, Geordi; T'Pol, Trip, and Phlox. Maybe I just have to give this series more time, but it's just not looking that good. Of course, I said the same thing about TNG. It wasn't until the 3rd season that it started to get really good, IMHO.

Academy Episode 5 was mostly a slog to get through. But also a great offering to DS9 fans.
Cirroc Lofton appeared as Jake Cisco. There was much discussion of Benjamin Sisko's presumed status as a god or at least being with the gods. Avery Brooks didn't participate himself - He's retired from acting., and it's well known that he's never been interested in revisiting his character. But he did allow them to use his voiceover taken from a jazz album he made. The final image was a simple title card saying "Thank you, Avery".
