I've been seeing that on the youtubes and have been wanting to see it. Is it any good? I suppose I could take a break from watching Star Trek to watch a documentary about Star Trek.
I haven't watched it yet. Just heard about it today. But will be watching it soon, figure should be interesting.
It's not bad. Very light and a bit goofy.
I saw it on TV as a youth and was so thrilled to see my fav characters back on screen...I was in awe of the movie.
I guess it didn't hold up 40 years later
I watched it when it first came out, and was glad to see the old gang again. While interesting, it was just a vehicle to show off all the new toys the SF department had, instead of being story driven, but then again, that was the style at the time.
It's a rough one. The scene with Kirk and Scotty on the shuttle, very, very, very slllloooowwwwlllllyyy circling the Enterprise before boarding. Looking at the Enterprise. Looking at each other. It took forever. The various shots of Spock floating through V'ger. It was a bit much.

I feel like I’ve posted this before. I may be repeating myself.
I just watched Star Trek III: The Search For Spock for the first time in quite a while. It gets everything right that the later movies (and TV shows) get mostly wrong.
It’s laser-focused on THOSE actors, playing THOSE characters to perfection, risking their Starfleet careers and more to do the right thing by one of their own. There’s no social commentary or attempt to mirror real current news or political events (at the time it was made). It’s a mission to save Spock.
It’s about friendships and loyalties.
The final scene at Mount Seleya on Vulcan is magic. If you’ve seen it you probably haven’t forgotten it.
Leonard Nimoy as Director was fascinated with tight closeups of his actors standing essentially nose to nose with each other while saying their lines. This adds a weird kind of intimacy that manages to work.
Yeah the movie has some slipshod special effects. But it doesn’t matter. The movie isn’t about special effects.
The score by James Horner is exceptionally good.
I give the movie five out of five stars for making the most of those beloved characters and actors. Of all the Trek movies, III is the most...human. And it’s criminal that III hasn’t gotten a full restoration.

It's the best odd numbered one, and has some weaknesses plot wise--but still an entertaining & enjoying watch--and mostly for the reasons you state, and until The Voyage Home, it was the funniest (Still the second funniest)
If I were watching the Star Trek movies for TOS characters, I might skip the Motion Picture-depending on my mood, and I would probably skip The Final Frontier, but I would watch the others.
