hey, you can view it who you like, and I'll have my head canon

I'm not so much a stickler for canon overall as it can be unnecessarily restrictive.

But my problems with the newer shows are not canon related, but the overall writing

I tried to enjoy Discovery as its own thing, but I couldn't
So much lazy writing.

SNW, sort of--I may give it another shot.

I only watched a bit of Picard, as I'm nota big TNG fan.

But if they do a Sisko show I'll check that one out.

but you know--you're allowed to do that--you can pick & choose what you like & don't like and view it that way--so that's cool.

And hey--I already mentioned I loved the Kelvin Universe movies.

I like some of the novels, but I don't try to fit them into canon either.

I just read them to enjoy them...

I am not into timelines, versions, etc. Can't be bothered, not for Star Trek or Star Wars.

I saw all the original series when it was first on TV. I've seen most of those episodes a number of times since they were in re-runs for at least 20 years. Love it all, especially Dave Gerrard's episode The Trouble With Tribbles and the Harlan Ellison episodes with Joan Collins (City on the Edge of Forever.) Ellison has a strange mind but his science fiction is really good. You might try his book Deathbird Stories if you like Ellison.

I liked the Picard series on Paramount...and the current Paramount series. I've been an Anson Mount fan since Hell On Wheels, one of the best western series of the past couple of decades. That series really got my attention.

So I'm just watching my way through Star Trek: Discovery (I had to look up the name, mostly because I don't really care what the series is called) with Anson Mount. I think it's well cast and strikes a decent balance of humor vs. drama. The Spock and Uhura parts are nicely done.

OK, I know I've said this before, but last night's episode of SNW was excellent. It might be the best episode of any Star Trek ever.

There's a quote from M'Benga, toward the end of the episode. I won't provide context in case anyone wants to see it yet, but it may be my favorite quote from the series.

"Some things break in a way that can never be repaired. Only managed."

Didn't really like last episode save for the general setting of the
flashbacks, the field hospital. The spiky rocks were a corny touch, but still.
An overly contrived, forced plot.
The actor is a martial arts champion so we can't have him not kick arse every now and then. So how 'bout we have him be a former commando who becomes a doctor but goes commando one last time after he refused to join a specops team who were obliterated so he goes in and completes the mission singlehandedly but one enemy escapes and lo and behold he happens to defect to our camp and become Controversy Sarek for it but ends up on the doctor's ship and fleet command insists he interacts with former veterans so the doctor and the turncoat meet and the latter practically begs to be killed so the doctor obliges, do-no-harm be fudged because all of our kids that died that day and some things can't be repaired because can you imagine today's post-9/11 audience being fine with a patching-up ending? No, as JJ's Spock taught us Feddie values are well and good but when you need to end the baddy you end the baddy period, I mean come. on.
Oh, and let's make up a temp supersoldier serum so that the nurse too can kick arse in a previous episode because we can't just have her bang Pointy all the time.

I am enjoying Star Trek: Strange New Worlds very much! It captures the spirit of the original pretty well.

(But since I'm not concerned about the titles, I had to correct the series title twice.)

About all I know about the series is:

  • The original series
  • The one with Picard and Seven of Nine
  • The new one with Anson Mount
Aside from that, I don't really care.
