The stoner/doom bassists thread...

Not open for further replies.
I'm not in a doom/stoner band at the moment but I may have one in the works to go with my death metal band.

Currently my live rig is:
Orange Terror Bass==>Hum Debugger==>Bass Big Muff==>Sunn 215

Recording rig is the same but with my Sunn 300T instead. Lugging that beast around is too much for live shows.

Wait!!!

You put your pedals between your head and cab?

That is pure doom!

Yeah, that dude's full of wishful thinking. And, if you look in the right places, you can certainly find gear for cheap (I snagged my Sovtek for 450-ish, and my Orange for a little over 1K). I've just noticed the prices exploding in the last three or four years.

Remember: riffs, then rigs...

Although dope rigs are always fun to drool over. ;)

i bought my first sunn head, a concert bass, about 4 years ago in rochester NY, i only paid about 300 for it and in stores that price has definitely gone up. but if you stick to craigslist and talkbass you can get good deals.

but you are right, the stigma that goes with old tube amps has made things a bit pricier in general, IMO it applies more to the boutique high end guitar amps like vintage Oranges, Hiwatts (some of these prices are just a joke), and old big muff pedals. ive seen hiwatts push 4k, and ive seen big muffs push 700-800. lol

@Mattosaur, not sure if that's a Delgada Dixie is playing or not. There was one of those on the TB classifieds back on October I was GASing pretty hard for. I know I've seen the bassist from Bison BC rocking one.

As far as pedals go, I really just use a tuner, my bluebeard fuzz and a Boss OC-3 octave pedal. I let the G&L MFDs and SVT shape most of my tone.

Just saw this picture of Weedeater's Dave Collins posted on reddit: http://i.imgur.com/DCXoIl.jpg

Anyone have a clue what kind of bass that is? I'm thinking maybe it's a First Act Delgada (Invalid Link Removed), which I think is what the bass player from Baroness is playing as well right now, but I'm not really sure.

Whatever it is, I really dig the body shape. Too damn bad the Delgada runs $1800. I guess that's not awful, but it's certainly big boy money compared to what I was planning on spending on my next bass.

Let me verify it for you, it's a Delgada. They're great basses...I love mine.

Vegas, during my forced departure from TB, I fell in love with Swans.

Since you're possibly the only other Swans fan on the board, I thought I'd let you know. Their newest album absolutely blew my mind.

The rest of you guys should do yourselves a favor and check 'em out. Heavy doesn't come close to Swans.

Possibly! I said possibly!

Swans are a bit like Oxbow, in that way--it's not something you advertise to just anyone, at least, if you want to get laid.

Boning to "Shine" (the oxbow track) is still pretty high on my personal to-do list.

In other news, Long Trail Triple Bag gets the job done right.

My first real rig was a Peavey Mark IV and the matching 2x15. I got it for free, and used it for years. In fact, I still pair the 2x15 with my Sovtek (the head serves at backup!)

In other news, new rig post!

No worries. I'm just stoked that you guys were interested in appearing.

Not to mention that your album is killer. Ladies and germs of talkbass, these guys kill it.

Oxbow gets me laid quite regular.
you just dont know the right chics.... or dudes, if thats your thing.... i dont judge.... how can I? I like really annoying music!
If Oxbow got me laid regularly...

eventually I'd wake up from the best dream ever. :D

I have to say, though, Eugene Robinson puts on the best damn author readings I've ever seen--and as a literary type, I've seen a handful or five--definitely not to be missed!

Invalid Link Removed
I can also shoot you a PM, if you're so inclined.

Oh, and feel free to send away! I'm always down to profile more groups. (especially since I'm not in gigging mode right now!)

I've been toying with the idea of putting together a thrash/doom/sludge band that play's James Taylor covers.

We would stick with his original arrangements, but just crank the hell out of them and play them heavier and maybe an octave lower for full doom effect. Songs would include:

Sweet Baby Doom
Carolina in my Sludge
How Thrash It Is (to be loved by you)
Fire and Doom
Thrash on the Roof
Shower the People (with sludge)
Don't Let Me Be Doomy Tonight
You've Got a Thrash Friend
Copperdoom

I had a similar idea for a doom band that played soul covers. I planned on calling the band "Crucifried."

To me, most old soul/motown style songs sound like they have heavy metal titles (Chain of Fools, Midnight Hour, etc).

riffs then rigs...

Excellent advice. Back to stumbling my way through "Dragonaut" for the umpteenth time tonight. :)
