The stoner/doom bassists thread...

It's a bit frustrating to be making these choices based on hearsay, but I really can't really tell the difference between 10s, 12s, and 15s when I'm just jamming in a music store. Sure everyone loves a 410, but so much of that is historical rather than based on actual listening.

there isn't really going to be any difference between speaker sizes - a speaker's size makes no difference. The cab that it's in makes the difference. instead of comparing 12s and 10s and 15s, compare individual cabs that you like the look of - cause that's all speaker size really changes, is the look

Getting ceramics is certainly still an option. Wasn't thinking about phasing when mixing speaks; I'll be sure to test that out before I start mixing and matching.

every driver is different, and every cab is different. Cabs can have similar frequensy responses even tho they are loaded with speakers of different size.

I would take a look at bag end cabinets. I think they can be had fairly cheap, even if you can't find what you want used.
If you want to go with neos I have heard that the 15" Eminence Kappalite 3015 likes to be pushed hard compared to other neos. It also has a fairly even frequency response up to a hump in the mids-high mids and goes pretty low.

I see I'm late to the party like usual. Nice to see a Doom Thread. I'm one of those freak non stoners in a stoner/doom band.

There is a little Doom Love in AZ, but I would almost refrain from calling it a scene anymore. Doom is a tiny little part of the "metal" scene in AZ which is more Death/Grind/Black/Noise/Punk metal.
Here's never giving up a chance at self promotion

Very cool, I like it.

You guys are lucky to have a good doom/stoner scene where you live. Where I live/moving to has the standard "metal" scene and the only people I jam with already have two-three bands. Living in Oregon where all we are is mountains, rain, and desert you would think more people would be playing this genre.

+1 I cut everything above 2.5khz. The 3015LF speakers sound so massive. They do get a bit honky so you have to do some tweaking. However, my Peavey tube pre sounds so thick. Getting this 2-15" cab was the answer to what I wasn't getting with my hi-fi cab. People often say, that it is only a speaker to be used in a triamp setup (fearful/Omni). It sounds good enough without a mid or tweeter to me. You just have to make sure to back off high frequencies when you run distortion.

I'm willing to bet that most stoner rock musicians aren't stoners. Like they say in such hawks such hounds, it's an "unfortunate monicker"
Really? I'm in a 5 piece and I'm the only one not wasted all the time. In fact, out of all the bands I know, hang with, play with, I think I'm the only non stoner in the whole bunch. Could be a regional thing too, but that's reassuring info at least. I was beginning to think I was an exception to the rule.

No, we bass players are just squares.

I was the only one who didn't get down in most of my bands. It was never a bad thing. People would try to get me once and then realize it wasn't worth their efforts.

I had a band break up and get back together without me (lame story) but we were all still friends. I visited a jam session and they said they were so happy to be in a band where everyone smoked. They baked up the rehearsal space while they were playing.

Yeah I wouldn't want to admit it online either..

:D
