I'm originally from PA. I'd say they're more death metal and metalcore, which is kind of surprising as lots of doom/stoner/sludge comes from areas with lots of rednecks

These rigs look like fun, I need to check out some Doom/Stoner recordings. So I live in VA and there doesn't seem to be *any* Doom/Stoner scene down here, what "tri-state" area are you talking about that includes MD? MD, DE, and PA? Thanks for any info.
yes he does. I've played it with him, and he is quite good at it.
I'm in a drone metal band with my mate. We play in 5 string open C tuning and bi-amp our guitars through bass and guitar amps. We might get an anarcho-feminist singer at some point.
as stereotypical as it sounds, i'm really digging Sunn O))) on the doom/drone front right now. but my musical listening tastes change weekly, so yea...
awww, shucks, thanksi like how this is the new bonekrushing threadddddddd...now with 100% less cooler name
Well. I want to start playing some drone/doom. I'm thinking to make it a bit more experimental and noisy, though, but at it's core it'll be drone/doom. I just don't know where I'd begin, though! Got any advice for a noob, TB?
Playing advice, mostly. Gear advice is cool too, but money isn't infinite.
DoomandHeavy said:Do you guys use picks or fingerstyle for playing doom? I like using a pick to do some power chords and Man is the Bastard style riffing, but I love using fingerstyle and even slap and pop!! Do any of you guys use fretless basses? I'd love to slide around while all fuzzed out!!
I got my Earth head for just over $200 when the repairs were completed and it's actually pretty awesome. Dirty tone for sure, but pretty awesome dirty tone. Other than that, any bigger cab will do. Something more than a 410, I'd say.
Playing differs so much. We're kinda riffy and use a lot of octaves. A heavy hand helps a lot too. Play every note like you mean it.
Cut some low/low mids. I know it goes against your better judgement, but it's the only thing that will prevent farting out besides replacing your speakers

Got the above pictured pair in a local Craigslist deal for $450 when my 1st Concert Bass started to hum a little.
I've since upgraded my main amp to a Sunn Beta Bass that I got for $250, which is less than I paid for my 1st Concert Bass years ago.
Still though, it blows the Concert Series out of the water.
Main basses are:
MIA Precision w/ the S-1 switch I never use & a Badass II
an Ampeg Dan Armstrong Bass Reissue
& a MIM Fretless Jazz
^This was my original rig from a few years ago. It now sits sideways under my brothers Sunn Beta Lead and Marshall Vintage Modern 4X12 to make his rig into a full stack.
I'll admit it, sometimes I hook up all three rigs and doom out all alone,![]()
I am green with envy over the sunn amp and the 2x15....that'd the kind I want, too...
Thanks and believe me, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED if you get one.
A lot of people like to say that these type of rigs aren't up to "todays standards". Well if they're not, then take me back to yesteryear.
I will say I have yet to listen to new Sword all the way through - a testament to how little the sound grabbed me.
The most current release that I did give my full attention and LOVED was Ufomammut's EVE. If you haven't heard that, get on it.
+1
I just started a little project with a drummer buddy and I'm on guitar. It's like super spazz, never play the same riff more than 4 times in a song, and it goes from sludge to grind to punk to shoegaze all in the same song which hovers around 1 minute. Once we get everything final with a singer, I'll post it up if anyone wants to hear it.
I've got yer Rig o' Doom right here!![]()
So any Monster Magnet fans dropping by here?
