+1 on the bandcamp page, bassboysam, you guys are 70's-erfic!

I have a question about your Matamp- how does it compare to an SVT? i've heard different things about these, like it's 200 watts by British standards, which is actually 400 US watts. i heard the same thing about Orange, though it never sounded right to me. also, what resistance can it run at?

According to Matamp it does 200 watts clean and will push 300-325 watts at full volume. I have the volume between 11 and 12 o'clock through a vintage ampeg 810 and its plenty loud. Can't comment on the Orange as I have never played one. Not sure about the UK vs US power thing either. The SVT can defenitly get as loud if not louder (both amps are loud enough) its just a preference of tone. Comparing against my '78 SVT I find the GT200 cleaner in the preamp and with less low end and more emphasis on the low mids. A little harder to dial in specific tones with the GT200 as I am still learning the EQ which is really interactive and changes character depending on volume and gain settings, but that's all part of the fun.

It's all about your personal preference. What exactly is the cab? Sealed or ported? Some tube amps don't play nice with ported cabs. I am a tube amp guy until the end. There are a lot of tube vs. SS threads in the amps forum that you should skim through. But the best thing to do is try try try and decide using your ears.

I will also add that with the exception of the Mesa Walkabout and M-Pulse, hybrid heads are not good at simulating a full tube head. Tube preamps are a marketing scam in my opinion. The tube tone comes from the power tubes. I prefer SS heads to hybrids, and something like the VT bass pedal captures the tube tone better than any hybrid head, with the exception of the Mesas. Most hybrid heads don't run nearly enough voltage in the preamp to really get any tone effect. Some say a tube pre warms up your tone but I don't hear it.

I just want to say, this thread has shown me some incredible music, let alone gear. I never listened to stoner/doom/sludge till just recently after finding some bands mentioned on TB.
Does anyone have any suggestions for writing/playing stoner/doom stuff, other than gear?

For me it's all about attitude.

Keep it heavy but understand that heavy comes in many forms.

Keep it loose, experiment but don't over complicate just because you think it sounds too simple. Simple can be awesome.

Keep it pure (cheesy but true) play what comes naturally, don't force things.

Oh and monster stacks and volume can't hurt.:)

Also listen to as much music as possible, play along with songs but dont try to learn them, just understand why it works. Chord progressions, melodies, tempos, rhythm etc.

If you can find it, watch the movie Such Hawks Such Hounds. It's a good intro to the "scene".

Yes.

Relax. Not that I think you need to relax specifically, but in general, I think playing stoner doom stuff works best when you're kinda laid back.

like Monobrow too. superb sound production on the album.

Recorded, mixed and mastered for about $1000 at the Meatlocker Studios Link Removed and www.producedbybond.com

With the exception some additional guitar tracks it was all recorded live off the floor. We did re-amp the bass track in some spots too, but that's about it.

We should have the vinyl in a day or two. Really excited about that.

I've posted this before, but that's not a big problem I guess. Stoner rig is stoner, isn't it?

I've just bought MXR Phase 100 and it's so cool effect over other phasers, but it takes out to much lows. I'll probably make some looper with blend knob to mix it with my dry signal.

Recomendations for an amp set up that's relatively affordable? 350watts feels tiny when it comes to doom. I'm looking for tube amps, but it's looking pretty costly. Anyone have any recomendations for it?
