The stoner/doom bassists thread...

I've been getting nothing but endless compliments on my tone since I got my G&L. Just running it through my Bluebeard and SVT into my Bass Bombs. Sounds like the earth is splitting. Check out my bands stuff! Not me playing, but fellow TBer father of fires. Vocals should be added soon and we may be recording new material in a month or two.

Recomendations for an amp set up that's relatively affordable? 350watts feels tiny when it comes to doom. I'm looking for tube amps, but it's looking pretty costly. Anyone have any recomendations for it?

Depends what you consider relatively affordable. Both Traynor YBA200 and Peavey VB-2 can be had used for around $500. You could also probably find some older, lower wattage tube heads that would do just fine with efficient speakers (Ampeg V4, old Traynor and Peavey, etc) and while tube is king, SS is not bad. I have a Peavey Mark VIII I got for $100 I'd gig with in a heart beat. Dixie Dave uses SS Sunn stuff on the Weedeater albums and his tone is killer.

Yup, I got my Earth SuperBass for $115 & put a couple hours worth of work cleaning, changing input jacks, and replacing the power cord. All that for $205 and it's a great backup for both me and my guitar player. He used it last week when I forgot to pick up his V4 and it sounded pretty much the same (though a little more shrill in the mids). The old Peavey Marks are good, Traynor Monoblock... Some SS is solid. Ha, pun intended.

The band I'm playing in is sort of on the doom wagon. I have no problems when playing my fender jazz or classic ray through my peavey alphabass and Ampeg 810. With a pedal for some grit / fuzz the tonal possibilities are endless. I have sold an SVT and 300T thanks to the little alphabass...

Yeah been there, when we recorded our album I was not 100% comfortable with the material so I just kept it simple and focused on tone and mood instead of notes. Our songs continue to evolve even after we recorded them. A song is never really "done". I bet if we were to rerecord the album it would sound quite different now.
Totally. I'm doing the same - all the music has been written and I'm just making sure I fit in and fill in where I need.

Fantastic! :bassist:
Thanks! :bassist:

You will find very few tube amps above 350 watts. It might not seem like that much, but with tubes driven into overdrive, it is.

Relatively affordable tube amps... well, firstly, go used. That said, there's always Traynor and Peavey. Used V4's and V4B's from Ampeg, while only 100 watts, are relatively affordable. Even used Mesas are often relatively reasonable.

You don't HAVE to go tube, though. For a cheap rig that'll work great for doom, old Peavey mark series head, and 2x15 cab. Or a 3620 if you can score it.

With doom, the big sound comes from having a lot of speaker, not necessarily having a lot of watts. My head's only 180 watts, after all, and it's loud as hell.

Is there an echo in here? :)

For playing in Cold Mourning I use my Ric 4003 (using both pickups, all knobs maxed) tuned to Eb (or drop Db rarely) into my Traynor YBA-1 or Sound City B120, into my Ampeg 810. I go for a relatively clean sound (power section breakup, but no pregain or pedals), very punchy with a lot of treble rolled off. I've used a lot of high gain setups before, but since we go for a more traditional doom metal sound I like to keep it in sort of a Black Sabbath/Deep Purple sound and let the guitars handle the gain. It all comes together sounding pretty heavy to my ear and I'm used to much lower tunings for heavy music.

I find my YBA-1 to have plenty of volume for me at this point, gets a nice little bit of growl and tames a lot of the ol Ric click. It's still there for me to dial in to my taste, but I can soften the edges easily without making my whole tone sound like mud.

Thanks everyone for the tips, i'm lovin all the bands. And BassBoySam, I'm really digging monobrow, and Lowest end, the band sounds awesome. I'm really envious.
I've got my TAFM for fuzz, an eh 200 watt acoustic halfstack with the 1x15, and its working ok sound wise with my P. Now I just need to find other people to play with. Yet again, being 16 sucks. lol

Thanks!

FYI I also have played with this band: Invalid Link Removed, more of a death/doom thing. I recorded the album and have been playing live with them, but I'm about to completely reshuffle the bands I play with so everything (other than Birch Hill Dam) is in flux.

As for fuzz, I'm completely in love with the Sansamp BDDI and the Way Huge Pork Loin. They're very different (Sansamp more low end, Pork Loin warmer and more traditional sounding) but work together fairly well if tamed properly. I used the Micro Pog octave pedal sometimes and the sound is absolutely HUGE.

Currently, trying to keep it around $1000. I was thinking of an SWR headlite through an ashdown 4x10. It's about $1100.

I'd love to go used, but I haven't found much in any local shops.

Might not be that close to you, I'm not that familiar with Florida geography.

Look on craigslist. For a thousand bucks, you should be able to do way better than an SWR and 410.

Also, look in the talkbass classified section.

Meh about amps I think I get a pretty decent tone with line 6. Skip to the end with the mini-bass solo or the middle bridge section you get a good idea of the tone. Course I'm playing a Zon so that probably helps.

Most of the tone is still in your fingers. But for Stoner/Doom/Sludge live massive volume is a must. But for recording? I disagree.

Thanks man! I forgot about CL. I texted the guy about the peavey head and might call about the ampeg cab later.
