The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I use my Finally v2 as a true DI. My amp sim and eq comes from my HX Stomp.

Nice! How does that pair with the stomp? I'd imagine a little tube after digital never hurt no one. Got my first sushibox en route to me! (Underground Accelerator)
I've run both the finally v2 and the neptunium after my stomp and had great results. Also ran my Arkham Oracle after it very well. Pretty much, I think it's a great idea to add in a little tube after it. I haven't tried them in front or in the loop yet though. Hmmm.

Thank you! That was very insightful and helpful... haha, I think I can stop worrying about wanting a Neptunium now and return my Sushi Box cravings back to the More that I've been waffling over for the past year.
Out of curiosity, do you suppose putting a More before my Finally might add some of that "fullness" that the Neptunium has?
My More arrived a couple of weeks ago, it definitely seems to make everything a bit fuller/fatter sounding, although I'm running mine at the start of a board with quite a few other things in between, with a finally v2 and an Oracle on either side of the stereo split. I currently have an Underground accelerator before the finally to give an eq and preamp sound on that side and I think I prefer that to using the More in that position. I like using the more near the start of the chain so that everything has that fullness of sound (plus I find quite a few pedals respond better to an ever so slightly hotter signal)

Coming from a finally V2 w/ a 12au7....

The finally was more "colored" for lack of a better word. The neptunium is fuller. But we are talking very minor differences. Like very minor. Pushing each the finally had much more variation available to do more of that "tube thing," especially with higher gain tubes than the 12au7. The neptunium just keeps getting louder with the same sonic signature. It doesn't drive, but whatever you're sending it too might start.

The EQ really shines with the neptunium though. The bass knob comes on very quickly and heavily. But using the HPF with a heavy boost of lows kind of works like the Pultec truck in that it gives you a nice bump without becoming boomy. Plenty of detail available on the high knob.

If you want a very clear and clean full bodiedb sound with the ability to tweak the EQ get the neptunium. If you want to get something with a little more character of it's own and the ability to pump that character a bit more get the finally.

But honestly, you can't go wrong with either and both work extremely well for what they are.
This exactly matches the impressions I got from demos of these units.

The Finally imparts noticeable tube warmth and grit (depending on which tube it has) whereas the Noble/Nobelium/Neptunium is more subtle (but still tubey) with basic EQ capabilities.

I'm all for the Finally but since I can't make a purchase right now, I'm dying to see what v3 brings to the table.

Turns out gain staging is important, and not something I had thought about much until trying to coax new sounds out of my pedals. This is how I discovered I like the breakup on the Underground Accelerator. I tried a MORE, then an EP Booster, in front of the UA directly and the breakup was nice.

Once I put the UA in my HX Stomp FX loop I realized the Stomp input couldn't take the level needed to overdrive the UA the way I wanted. Had to add a Gain block in the Stomp that toggles on when the UA loop is engaged to maintain the breakup sound I liked. I just make sure my patch/block levels are around unity on the output side and everything sounds great.

I found the same with the Depth Charge clone I got from JohnK. It sounded like it wasn't working until I pushed a very hot signal into it, then it was like a magical noise maker.

Neptunium and Venus Z arrived this morning… is it 5:00pm yet?!

I'd really be curious about the Venus Z on an upright. Supposed to get my Neptunium tomorrow but I won't be able to test it out until next week probably... The Nobelium is much better for electric than upright, but my guess is that the second tube adds a little too much saturation. Will post musings about it when I get some experience with it.

Are you running it thru the 1/4"? If not, you're not getting both tubes. If so, hit the xlr out to eliminate one tube.

I like the Neptunium. It strikes a good balance between color and fidelity. The eq is nice to have too.

For now, I’m really liking the Broughton Studio One into the Neptunium as the end of my chain. It’s very satisfying to play through, and has plenty of eq to match the room or whatever.
Interesting to read this as I was thinking to sideline my S1 with the incoming Finally V2 + dig out my old Broughton HPF to put it before the Finally (I know the Finally also has HPF).

The rest of the chain currently has a Slampegg, Fliptop, and Super Stack after the Omnicomp, but I use any of those Pres only one at a time.

I had considered getting a SB or SBM to put in there. Board real estate becomes a factor.

I actually like the coloration of the SBM more than the S1. But the filters, eq, and master volume on the S1 are nice. So do I go for a subtle tone enhancer that may not be audible in the mix, or a nice set of eq that I may not use much?

I'd go for the subtle tone enhancer but I am a sucker for that. At the end of the day though if it inspires you to play better hearing the slight difference, then it's a winner. That's how I justify it to myself anyway!
