The first active electronics my fretless hits is my Underground Accelerator, gain turned up to the edge of saturation, mids up full, bass and treble boosted a bit to taste. It's not an obvious "effect", but if I turn it off there's definitely something missing.
I play a sometimes percussive finger style, strings slapping the fingerboard are part of my sound. The UA turns the attack crunchy and a little compressed, and the sustain is warm and thick. The treble boost lets harmonics ring out. I'm a big UA fan.

I use my first UA with a JJ 12AX7MG tube in it for fretless and guitar stuff. The mid range bump works well with those instruments. I also occasionally use my JC Emerald for a similar mid range response.

Would the red channel of the Dreamcatcher add value? Not for an overdrive, but for a different EQ setting, e.g. when moving from a long-note Mwah sound to a staccato Jaco style of playing?
If you want 2 foot switchable eq curves, the DC is a great answer. Keep in mind it's passive eq, just like UA, etc. The only currently offered active eq from Sushibox is Venus Z.
Would a greenhouse with an empress bass paraEQ be the ultimate preamp?

Empress ParaEQ >> Finally has been my preamp for a good long while and it’s a solid combo as well. I have a hard time thinking about putting together a board without it.
I know you were asking about fretless, but…. For metal, is the answer the Tarantula Fuzz?
Or perhaps the JC Emerald, absolutely rocks on bass.

Which version of the Finally do you have, and how are you stacking the two HPFs' settings?
First post ever on TB, but long time lurker. Just curious about how a fifth gear v1 would sound through the loop of a greenhouse.
I have the V2 - I typically dont stack them. I’d been doing kind of a Resonant Filter EQ trick just boosting lows into the HPF, and a low mid notch to clean up some mud.
Though I just tried the new Lowtec I picked up, and that shook up the settings on the Para EQ, so it’s just doing a notch and the filters. Maybe I’ll spend more time trying to coax the thump of the Pultec trick out of the Para
