I have a 12AX7 in mine. Ridiculously loud. It's not a good fit in my opinion because the output is not manageable and the grit comes on suddenly at 2 o'clock. Don't know what the taper is in the Gain pot. The pedal is designed for the 12AU7, which I doubt breaks up at all. So for higher gain tubes a slower taper like reverse log may be better.

However I'm just thinking of putting a 5751 in mine to tame the output and smooth out the onset of grit.
This is based on recommendations from this thread. Sorry I forget the name of the person who vouched for this tube.

I’ve got the stock spec v3 with the 12AU7 and it doesn’t break up when you max out the gain, unless you have a really hot signal going in. So I wouldn’t worry about headroom until you’ve tried it with your own chain. With a ‘regular’ level of input, the gain just adds that ‘thing’….

So I have an update regarding my Venus Z and the issue of distortion from, what I thought, was from a hot output. It wasn't the Z it was a combination of my compressor, a Source Audio Atlas, and a bad cable. I noticed that the Atlas wasn't saving my settings correctly. I would save settings I liked and when I went back to it the settings changed back. After a couple attempts I was able to save the settings. I'm not really sure why it was happening, probably an issue with my computer or the Neuro App?

Now I have the Z set flat and I'm loving how it warms and thickens up my tone.

I'm still curious if the Finally would work better for this? I have Z setup flat because I'm using a SA PEQ2 to set my tone. I wonder if being able to adjust the gain and level separately will give me more warmth and thickness? Does anyone have experience with both the Finally and the Venus Z? Is the Venus Z set flat similar to the Finally at certain settings?

I don't have experience with the Venus Z, but I have a per my last email and a finally v2, The finally definitely sounds warmer/thicker/fatter than the PMLE set flat, although boosting a little of the lower end changes that, however it's a slightly different flavour of it. This is with the gain in the finally turned up around 1 or 2 o'clock and a 12AT tube in there at the moment, with it backed off they have more similarities than differences.

I like the finally for the sparkle and richness it brings to the sound without sounding brittle or lacking body to it (I know, buzzword bingo), the PMLE is great for a more modern sound without it sounding ice picky or 2 dimensional, but if you're not using the EQ, and are unlikely to (which I think is a shame as the EQ works brilliantly) then the finally might give you more of what you're looking for?

I would try cranking the EQ on the Z and seeing what happens. I have my PMLE (basically a Z) set like this cranking the mids and rolling off the top. Sounds really warm and thick with my set up. The active EQ is really decent to use.

When I first got the VZ I setup the EQ and it was/is effective. Once I got the distortion issues solved I experimented with it set flat to see how effective my setup was without any added EQ and I really like how everything is sounding. Which is what piqued my curiosity for a Finally even more. Before getting the VZ I was looking for a Finally however an opportunity to get a VZ in a trade happened. I am happy with my tone currently, I'm going IEM 100%, and being able to gain it up a bit is intriguing, however I'll probably be going with the VZ for the foreseeable future. Sometime next year, maybe summer, I'll revisit the possibility of getting a Finally. Of course if I'm able to sell the rest of my unused pedals sooner or have an opportunity to trade them for one...

I do use a Sushi preamp for when I go ampless, but to me a badass bass tone should be bass and amp first, then anything else is effects. If you can't get that, then you have the wrong amp.

I've owned those two and Westinghouse and Neptunium, but when tested the character of the Finally popped out more than the rest, I saw no point in stacking...it doesn't become 'more', things start cancelling out.
Love the Finally, everything else got sold.

This has generally been my experience as well....not universal but in most cases.

Nothing wrong with the TH 500... for ampless situations.

I do believe there is a point of diminishing returns, but I guess it’s in a different spot for me. There’s nothing wrong with the di on a tonehammer. I had one, and while I liked it, I love the old Genz Benz Streamliner much more. It has 3 tubes. When I can’t use it, I use a board that has 4 tubes. I like the tone of my board better. That said, I have tried more tubes and felt diminished returns for me.

For me it depends on what my total chain is all about.

If I'm using a tube amp, then perhaps a plethora of tube preamp pedals can muddy the tone a bit.

However, if I'm using a solid state amp along with a few preamp tube pedals, eh...not bad!

If there was only a simple formula to follow!
