The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I agree…the Slampegg Bee into a Finally is fantastic. Really really good. I sold both recently (stupidly) and now working to get that exact combo back. Rebought a Bee, now waiting on a V3. I had a V2 previously. Was looking at the Mayday, but I think I’d use the variable hpf more in the V3 as opposed to the eq in the Mayday. I think…
The Mayday/PMLE has an active EQ and the bass frequency set at 50hz. So you could cut that and create a hpf like curve. The mids EQ points are very useful to have on that pedal too (PMLE in my case). Not exactly the same though but having the other EQ options is cool.

+1 on the Slampegg Bee into Finally. I have one of the earlier mini tube versions in stealth black laser etched into a finally V1 with Jensen transformer that just nails that classic sound.

Recording preamp board.jpg

This board lets me cover a broad range of classic tones for bass and occasionally guitarish stuffs.

I have a question for the group. I have a small pedalboard that features: Diamond Bass Comp > Sushibox Elementary > SFX Diplomat (preamp / DI).

I have been using the Elementary for CLEAN tube tone, and the SFX preamp for tone shaping and DI.

My question is whether the Sushibox Single Slice might effectively replace the Diamond AND Elementary for my purposes.

In summary, will the Single Slice deliver the same tube tone as the Elementary (with all dials at noon)?

Thanks.

No, IME it will definitely not....not even close. If you like what the Diamond does, keep it. I bought a SS and eventually sold it....sticking with the Empress and Diamond comps.

TLDR; I’d keep that Diamond.

There’s a huge difference between SS and Tube Based Comps. Tube based comps are like putting a lid on toan. Its really nice for bass, IMO, and Ive got the little Effectrode and LA, AND Doc Lloyd DL2A, and each one do what it do, but the Becos Comps do something much differently that appeals to what Im tryna do TODAY… I think- this is a big time generalization - tube based comps belong towards, if not at the end of the chain, while Solid State comps do what they do best early on, if not first in line, but directly after dirt.

I get what you're asking - i considered The Watt for the same reason, struggled with it, actually and reached the conclusion that i pretty much had tube compression more than covered and REALLY liked the Becos Mini Pro, and i liked it at the BEGINNING of the chain. The Watt is clearly meant for end of chain, and i imagine the SS would fare better there as well.

Many mitigating factors tho- do you want to run an effect that could benefit from compression early in the chain, are you playing a bass with a hot, active signal? YMMV.

I just want to shout out to Nathan and thank him for all the knowledge and innovation he has given to the TalkBass community.

I’ve been a SushiBox fan since I got my first pedal, Particle Accelerator X, and have since used some sort of Sushi pedal on every gig I’ve had since then.

I’m also glad he is local to me and has actually come out to a tribute band gig I’ve had to hear his creations in the local music scene.

As far as I know the Single Slice is not a true tube based compressor, it is in fact an OTA based compressor with tube buffering either before or after or maybe even both.
I can't remember where the tube buffering is in the pedal but I am certain that Nathan has explained it in the past, I think it has a CA3080 IC in it just like the MXR Dyna Comp has.
I could always be wrong but I think that is what it is.
Cheers
Mick

Question - anyone find that the XLR out from your Neptunium is noisy? I go directly into the board at my church and i can hear the noise (it's quite obvious). So i used the 1/4 out with a separate DI and it was much better. Is this normal with tube pedals or something that's not exactly right with my pedal?

I find that compressors behave and sound differently for specific individuals and their gear and playing style.

For me, compressors, envelope filters, and maybe a little less so, octave pedals all require a bit of a learning curve for me to find the settings that work well with the way I play, and with each bass. Sometimes I feel like I'm playing the pedal as well as the amp in addition to the bass.

I need to try out compressors and see how they fit into my playing. I am currently rotating between a v1 Smoothie, a DOD Milkbox, and an EBS Multicomp. They're all different, and all have pluses and minuses. I also recently got an Empress but haven't gotten to really put it into my playing yet. I have other compressors, and I actually like the compressors in the Zoom MS60B and MS60B plus pedals.

This feels like yet another Talk Bass rabbit hole, and it's evidenced by the massive threads and efforts made by Ovnilabs and Scubaduba.

Oh, and finally, when I have distortion on my tone, I don't really feel the need for a lot of compression since there's natural compression going on.

Has anyone ever set up a board with a finally or other Sushi DI not as the last pedal in the chain?

I have an older finally. V1 that I have a NOS 50’s Raytheon 12AX7 tube in it that sounds just too good to shelve.

I am mostly IEM for all my gigs, but have the option to run a rig with my tribute band if I want to.

I have this board to run into the effects loop of my Fender Rumble 500C/112 and going out to FOH through the BDDI.

I initially had the finally last, but found it easier to control with the BDDI last in the chain.

Seems to sound and work well as is, but I have a SushiBox Particle Accelerator I can throw in that spot as well. Seems kinda wasteful, but sounds pretty good with this configuration.

Mine is second to last, with a tuner being last, so not quite what you're asking about.

I built it this way for an ampless gig I do with a live karaoke group, we do lots of company parties and we used to have a weekly bar gig.
The Finally xlr goes to our IEM rack and is always on. The tuner is last so I can kill the signal to FOH out front between songs as we sometimes have to show each other how songs go during singer changes. The Finally has a '57 Sylvania 12AU7 and sounds so good.
It all fits in a Nano case.

Cool set up. I’ve been using mine, as shown in my previous post, for IEM church gigs. I am going to take it out to drive my rumble stack for an outdoor gig this coming Friday.

I’m confused. If Finslly only goes to IEM, how do you get to FOH?

It should be very quiet. Does the noise still happen when you use the pedal completely on its own?
Eg Bass-Nept-board/amp

Mine is dead quiet. Do you hear the noise regardless of what position the ground lift switch is in?
