Okay I'm trying to figure out which pedal is for me.

Initially what led me here was the Slampegg because I think I want an Ampeg emulator but now I'm not so sure. After listening to the soundclips on the website, the only one I like is the first one (lowest gain). I'm not looking for that buzziness of the higher gain settings. I'm looking for thick and somewhat dark (but not murky...for example I can't stand the sound of flatwound strings) without any buzz or fizz on the high end. I'd like for it to start out 'clean' (or clean-ish..I know) and be able to dial in the overdrive.

Liking the London Underground and Particle Accelerator. Would love to hear your experiences with all of these!

I like the Westinghouse clips for sure but do not hear much difference in the settings - perhaps that’s due to my IPad / Grado set up ? Will be interested to see what others think . I do wish there was a second simpler , slower paced riff with longer note duration so that note “ bloom “ is more apparent . It will also be very interesting to hear the upgraded tube version too if the Senor can get that up at some time .... Kelly

I obviously can’t speak for r Westinghouse yet, but for the Edison I’ll say the 3D quality, subtle thickening, and whatever is happening in the high end is hard to capture. I definitely miss mine when it’s off though

I was just going off the posted Sushi clips and I know the Edison clips show a very subtle but noticeable effect so I am not surprised you miss it when it’ s off Bunchy Mutt . What surprised me about the Westinghouse clips was that I could not hear much difference in the multiple power settings . But as I said that may be me or my monitor set up . Once May or a next round of stimulus shows up I will nab a spot for a Westinghouse - sadly , till then all my disposable funds are already spoken for ! Kelly

It’s probably a little brighter than what you’re looking for but I would imagine just rolling back the treble on the pedal or on your bass would probably get you where you’re wanting to be.

There’s been a couple user posted sound clips here and there that have been pretty excellent. I agree, some of the sound clips on the website or not super awesome and that is no offense to Mr. sushi . He’s got a lot of products and he’s basically a one-man show. But I don’t feel like a lot of the sound clips are like ‘dialed in’. It’s more like here’s everything at noon, here’s everything at three, here’s everything at nine, here’s switches on and everything maxed....

I do trust the feedback and reviews that I hear from people and I am anxiously awaiting my first couple sushi pedals coming soon!

I should probably apologize, my only bass (until my J is ready in a month or so) has flatwounds, so that's what is on all the demos I love the lower gain sounds of the Slampegg, and while I appreciate the growl it gets with more gain, it's not really my thing either.

It is subtle for sure, I'll see if I can find some time to do another demo with a different riff. I use that one because it's permanently saved into my looper, so for quick demos it's easy to just plug in and hit 'go,' and while it's fine for a general sound/feel demo of pedals, it's not ideal for picking up subtleties.

I completely agree. The differences are there, but they are hard to capture in recording. Part of the reason I try to push new models out so fast is so actual bassists can get them as soon as possible and I just hope that they do detailed demos so I don't have to

For what it's worth, after I had my Slampegg ordered (but before I received it), the soundclips on the website actually scared me a bit because it wasn't really the sound I was going for either. But my bass and setup don't sound like those clips and I got exactly what I wanted out of the Slampegg - couldn't be happier. It definitely can get a little bit dark (but I've been always using the ultra hi switch now), but thick is the right word to describe what it does to me. If you're going for "thick and somewhat dark", then I think you're looking at the right pedal.

It does dirty up fairly quickly (I'm running my gain around 10-11ish to stay mostly clean.....above that starts breaking up), but even at those low gain settings I feel like you get plenty of nice clean saturation - and definitely not buzzy or fizzy. Again, these are just my observations from my personal setup....you know your stuff, and if you think the Slampegg would do what you're looking for, I'd go with your instincts over the sound clips.

Totally understand… Hey, Nothing wrong with the mini tubes… My first one coming soon is a mini tube London underground. Next one will probably be some thing X series just to try some different things but I think the mini tubes are super cool!

And honestly if sushi didn’t confirm that most of the X series stuff works just fine at 9 V, I probably would’ve skipped the X series. But now he’s got me! Dang

So you absolutely cannot swap a 12AX7 for an EF86, and trying to redesign an EF86 preamp with a 12AX7 wouldn't really work, you would wind up with a completely different preamp.

Space Heater is pretty close though

Thanks for confirming my suspicion, with a much more in-depth answer! ha ha... I was just basing my suspicion on "The EF86 looks different than the 12AX7, so I assume they're not compatible." lol

Thanks also for posting the audio for the Westinghouse/Space Heater as well! Going back to listen now so I can (try to) make a decision on which to get for my March build!

The bypass tone sounds completely different here than it does on the Westinghouse clip. I skipped the bypass clip at first because I assumed it was the same as the other bypass clip, but the 9:00 sounded so drastically different that I went back to listen to the Bypass....and it seems like the difference is really in the base tone.

Geeze, I just listened to them again and I completely agree. I have no idea what's going on here. These were both recorded looper -> preamp -> Torpedo CAB M -> interface. I recorded them one right after the other, I didn't change any settings on the CAB M, I didn't change any settings on the interface. Nothing was EQ'd. I used the same cables. I didn't unplug anything in between. They are both true bypass. The bypass should sound exactly the same.

I have no explanation, my recording setup is haunted.

I have ended up slowly dialing back the gain and increasing the volume on my Slampegg each time I use it live. I like it so much I just keep using it, even though I have a PA sitting here as well that has only left the house once so far. It sounds like you would prefer the PA, but the Slampegg is definitely fat sounding and can stay on the cleaner side of things if desired. I would say really listen to the soundclips and figure out what you prefer.

My board build should be done next week - just waiting for one or two pieces to come in - especially the one Cioks cable I need to power a few things. But I took a partial build to my first socially distanced rehearsal in a few months. I mainly used the P-15, but for a few tunes I used the X side of the Twin. It sounded good as well but it is a touch different. I only took the Blast Cult tonight so I only needed one output technically.

But ... the way I'm ultimately wiring the board, I could use the OG Slampegg, the X, and the P-15 all at once from the same output. I can turn on/off the output from each. I really had to think about how to wire up everything.

I wanted to give it a bit of a trial run anyway because as I figured, some of the settings with regards to the C.A.B. work in a more controlled setting (i.e. recording/studio), but live it's a bit different. For example, I used the C.A.B. to tweak EQ a little for some settings and it sounded fine in headphones. The second I used a speaker it was not nearly as good. This is also why I saved setting with no EQ, too lol

I'm looking forward to getting this done so I can just forget about it. Part of me wants to get another C.A.B. M+ and have two separate boards - one for the P-15 and one for the Slampegg, but that's just dumb. It's be a little more "portable" (the board with everything is just under 20lbs) and in doing all of this I've added a little weight and size, but I'm no longer tone chasing. It's a happy medium and still light enough.
