So this is me not knowing much about EF86 tubes... They aren't swappable with a 12AX7, are they? Like... Maybe since EF86s are getting harder to find (and having to sub in the 6J32P), what about a Westinghouse created with a 12A*7?



I'm waiting on the clips to make a final decision between the Westinghouse and Space Heater, but I'm thinking the Westinghouse is the way to go at the moment. I might be up for trying the upgrade to the Mullard EF86 as well, if they're not all spoken for already.

12AX7 and EF86 are COMPLETELY different and definitely not swappable. Quick tube lesson:

12AX7 is a dual triode, which means it has two triode stages in it. Triodes are named such because they have three main parts: Plate (anode), Grid, and Cathode. Triodes are almost exclusively used for things like preamps.

EF86 is a pentode, there is only one stage in it. A pentode, as the name suggests, has five parts: Plate (anode), Suppressor Grid, Screen Grid, and Control Grid. Pentodes are most commonly found in power amps, and any power tube you can think of (EL84, EL354, 6L6, 6V6, 6550, etc) are pentodes. Lower-power pentodes, like the EF86, are also used in preamps sometimes because they have a neat "complex" sound.

So you absolutely cannot swap a 12AX7 for an EF86, and trying to redesign an EF86 preamp with a 12AX7 wouldn't really work, you would wind up with a completely different preamp.

Space Heater is pretty close though

I appreciate it, enjoy biology isn't really my thing, but if anyone ever figured out a way to let someone sleep on their behalf and still get the benefits for it I will happily trade pedals so I don't have to sleep anymore.

EF86s are so cool looking, you should add a glass panel or more cutout area to showcase it.

I actually prefer the cutouts exposing the tubes to a window. There's something kind of 1960s SciFi / Outer Limits about it.

I promise I'm fine, frankly I care the least about my health and well-being of anyone in my life, so my wife, kids, and friends make sure I'm well looked after. I stay up late most nights, but I'm not completely sleep deprived, and if my wife has her way I'll live to be 100. So I'm going to chop everything up and organize it, but just for fun this is the waveform of the same riff played through Westinghouse at 30V (full CCW), 50V (12:00), and 180V (full CW). There's a little more happening than just volume, the frequency response and color seems to change as well. I'll get demos up in a bit.

I'm very excited to get one in the march build. I have an Edison running last in chain for my metal, 6 string bass duet project so I'm going to compare the Westinghouse in that chain. I'm also assembling a small board for a more 60s, traditional bass vibe. Particle Accelerator, Westinghouse, Vox Snake Charmer Compressor, Bearfoot Queen Beest...not sure what will stick around but I'm looking forward to the starting point.
