But if I were to want to add a bit of tube color/warmth to my sound, not necessarily any overdrive, just more the character, would the Westinghouse be the way to go? Or would the Space Heater be the better option? Or...is there something else I should look into?

Not positive, I had a ged2112, but if it has a fx loop definitly insert the pedal there. I had a time putting things in front of the drive circuit, just didn't react the way that sounded good in front, sansamp gets finicky

I’ve been messing with some pedal combinations today and suddenly realized I’m spoiled for choices when it comes to B-15 inspired boxes.
  • SushiBox Slampegg Bee
  • Broughton Alex-1Bax
  • Barber Linden EQ

Only sad thing is that the Slampegg Bee is my only SushiBox pedal. I’m gonna have to correct that shortage soon.

Have you compared these to the grizzly overdrive? I know it's not explicitly b15 voiced, but it can be adjusted there. That's what I'm using at the moment and it's pretty good so far (but I also have the Slampegg coming).

I would also like to know how the preamp’s sound running into the Westinghouse… I know I’ve mentioned this before so I’m not trying to be pushy :-) and I know they’re not out in the wild yet so it would have to come from @Sushi Box FX Just for like a nice clean-bass tone. Just wondering if it sounds good or bad or too much toobz if that’s a thing? I don’t even care about sound clips just wondering if you’ve tried it yet? It might help guide future purchasing decisions :-)

I still have not tried it, I completely forgot. But I'm still waiting on my parts orders to get started on February, so I can put it on my to-do list tonight.

I’ve heard good things about the Grizzly Bear OD. But I’ve never played through one myself.

If you’ve never used a James/Baxandall type tonestack before then I think you’re in for a pleasant surprise. It allows you to actually boost the mids, which is something most tonestacks can’t do. The bass/treble controls are highly interactive. And by adjusting them various ways in relationship to each other you actually affect the overall frequency curve. If you’re new to it there can be a bit of a learning curve. But it’s not rocket science. And a little experimenting will soon let you suss it out.

Good easy to read tech articles on the Baxandall tonestack here and here if you’re into the geek details. Well worth checking out. :)

Sorta. Kinda. I guess so. :laugh:

I approached Josh a few years back when he was still accepting commissions for pedals. I said I needed a B-15N sound, but I needed about 300W of power behind it rather than 30W, and did he think a B-15 design preamp into a power amp was a viable idea. After some back and forth between us over some tech details the Alex-1 was born.

I asked him when the Fliptop came out if it was something I needed. And he said it was very similar in most respects except (a) the Fliptop has a cab sim which the Alex-1 doesn’t; and (b) the Alex-1 has a lot more output gain on tap - by design - than the Fliptop does since my spec asked it be able to adequately drive any effects loop out there. So his feeling was that unless I wanted the cab sim (and needed less output level) they were essentially the same box.

I especially like the Alex-1 because the knob settings match out identically to the very settings I use on my real B-15N fliptop amp. Not a big thing, I know. But it impressed me just the same.

I’ve had a Grizzly for a long time. Great pedal and it has some magic sauce using that mid control. Ed Friedland did a YouTube video on it sometime ago that sold me at the time.

I would agree that it can get close to the B15 tone. The LP filter helps and can get a bit of a cabsim.

I'll check out that video.

Yes, dropping the treble a little and running it through the b15 cab sim on the cabzone x can get pretty close. I'm eager to see if the Slampegg can kick it off my board since the grizzly makes for a good overdrive (ad the name would suggest) and looks better than most other pedals out there.

I generally use lighter compression settings, as with my LA-1A, so even w/o noticeable compressing it has some great tone enhancement happening. And the size of this thing...so much in such a small footprint. Bravo @Sushi Box FX!

Hows the noise floor on the deep dish in comparison to the la1a?
