The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I did an admittedly cursory search on the Gondwana and couldn’t seem to find out what it is exactly . Can someone fill me in on what it’s meant to do ? I assume that it’s not the Senor’s “Nobleish” creation if that is still a thing he may intend to create . .... Thanks , Kelly

I don't remember if there is one specific place where I lay the whole thing out, but the goal is for it to be my "all-in-one box" featuring a tube preamp, IR loader, headphone amp, and DI output. It's an ambitious project for me so I've broken it into phases:

Phase I - Try out the IR loader with the manufacturer's development board
Phase II - Design a similar development board with an OLED screen and digital selection of IR patches
Phase III - Replace op-amp stages of IR loader development board with tube stages so all analog signal paths are tube
Phase IV - Add tube preamp in front of IR section, add headphone amp and DI at end, include dedicated unaffected out from preamp

I just ordered the Phase III circuit boards yesterday, and frankly if that works it will already be a pretty useful box, but my goal is to have Phase IV (probably) be the last phase and have it released late spring/early summer.

I was originally considering including a digital effects module in there, but I'm thinking about putting in an FX loop instead so you can use whatever effects you want instead of being stuck with whatever I come up with.

YES FX LOOP!
Sorry, not sorry. Intentional caps. Very excite.

Not to pry for too much info, since you're still obviously in development, but what's your plan for the tube preamp voicing? I'm secretly hoping it's not based on Fender topology. I've found the typical Fender EQ just doesn't have the mid voicing that I prefer. Not saying I want it to be strictly Ampeg either, but maybe just a cleanish 3-band non-interactive active EQ would be best, you know? Maybe switchable or semi-parametric mid freq.

Sounds like to me you need to cancel everyone’s current orders and solely focus on this development.

For my own selfish reasons of course.

A tricky question to be sure. Using my personal sales as market research, Slampegg outsold both PA and LU consistently every single month since it was introduced. I absolutely love the PA and LU and can get excellent tones out of both, but gun-to-my-head if I had to choose one preamp over the others it would be Slampegg. Ideally I would only use one tube for the preamp and one for the IR in/out stages so I could keep it to two tubes for both power and size constraints. I'm looking at various FX loop designs and am leaning toward a high-voltage FET buffered FX loop, again so I don't have to use more than two tubes.

As fun as it would be to do that, I can only afford to work on development because of everyone's orders :P

Mids! I bailed on a Shift Line Olympic because of the cut only mids.

I have a LU and I do like it, don't get me wrong, but I prefer my other-brand SVT-based preamp first, generally speaking. Perhaps that's just what I'm used to have a few years of using it. Haven't tried the Slampegg yet, and debating whether I want to pick that up, or the SBVT, or both. It's tough to justify a Slampegg with a P15 sitting here right beside me.

Just give me a tightish mid bump at 700-800ish Hz and I'll be happy.

I was just looking at how feasible putting the SVT tonestack into a Slampegg would be :P Currently I'm not really sure, and frankly I still need to verify SBVT so I know the way I'm implementing that tonestack in a pedal will even work.

Good note on the bump, I'll see what I can come up with.

I wasn't trying to imply that it "needs" to be an Ampeg tone stack either, or based on any existing amp topology. If you could do a simple three band active EQ I personally think that would suffice (or dare I say might even be ideal). Like a flat at noon type thing, boost/cut on all three bands, and ideally non-interactive. Especially with an FX Loop, you could still insert any character pedal that you like.

I agree with trying to keep the power requirements under control, 100%.

Just thinking it through, Tube Pre>FX Loop>EQ>IR Loader>DI would be a pretty sick pedal board solution. I would 100% buy this. The FX Loop is the real kicker for me though. And as long as I'm telling you how to do your business, might as well make the FX Loop switchable Pre/Post EQ. ;)

If we are adding to a wishlist.... A future model of this could have two channels with a full eq for each for doublers. If you put a selectable mid and a notch you'll also sell to the upright players.

Just make a 3 or 4 band cut/boost EQ, possibly some selectable Hz in the middle and most importantly, a switch that defeats the whole EQ

I was thinking about two channels, as that would add a lot more options, but that alone will push it to three tubes. I guess the big question I'm trying to decide on is if I want it to replace your entire rig or just a couple parts of it.

Good point, I definitely think an EQ defeat switch would be useful. I'll look around at EQs, I have trouble choosing things. Naturally the FMV (Fender) and James (Ampeg) are the two most prevalent tonestacks out there, especially in bass stuff, but I'll never stop searching for the one tonestack that will make everyone happy at the same time.

This is why I just kinda want the C.A.B. M+ and use it. I have my tone stack. The Two Notes takes care of the amp sim and speaker. I don't want anything else mixed in.

What Sushi is building seems more like an all in one.

The other tricky part is that Two Notes owns everything. Sushi is using someone else's stuff for the digital, so he's at the mercy of them and now will have to support the software, etc.
