Not sure if anyone who has an Edison or incoming Westinghouse has any thoughts?

I'm thinking my WH will initially be going at the front of my chain. I did prefer the Edison after the C4 but before most other effects in my experimenting (link here for easy reference, as it was almost 50 pages ago now), but WH > C4 is still tasty... so my initial idea is to use it at the front to balance output levels between basses while adding some tube magic to the overall sound. I'm quite interested to hear the impact the WH's Voltage control has though, that might change the plan!

On the Edison sound clips posted in this thread awhile back, I definitely preferred the Edison before most other effects. So, I'm thinking Westinghouse early in the chain. I usually run my comp early for light comp/tone shaping, not heavy limiting. Not sure if I want to have the Westinghouse and Comp both early? If so do i want to go Comp>West or West>Comp. Or maybe move the comp downstream to after dirt and before modulation and/or before preamp pedals. Or, after the pre's right before the cabsim (come on Gondwana!!)?

Again, I know I just need to try it out but i didn't know if anyone else had any thoughts or maybe some folks with an Edison might have some input or advice?

haha I'm having the same recurring thoughts as well.
I'm most eager to try it first in chain. In my mind it makes sense to put it before compression to maximize the dynamic potential from the tube itself.
Then again, putting it after a preamp or compressor would allow you to boost the signal into the Westinghouse to maybe coax some more character from the tube.
There's only one way to figure this one out...

Definitely! Do you use a pedal compressor? If so where do you plan on putting that in the chain?

I do indeed, a Symmetry currently at the front of my chain. That's probably where some testing will come in though... I do like @NKBassman's idea of using the output on the comp to goose the WH a bit, so now I'm wondering how comp > WH would sound, but like he said... only one sure way to find out!

Hindsight being 2020, I probably should've experimented with the Comp/WH order as well when I was recording Edison samples. Didn't even think about it!

I don't know about the 2 new tube pedals coming out but I assume they operate similar to most others, running a boost before them will make breakup much more variable, you could set and forget your valve pedal and use the boost pedal to adjust everything, as long as the clipping it linear, it should be. Running a comp in between, or as the boost will help with spikes of signal from the bass but will also take away from the response you'd get from not having one. I use several boost pedals to push valve preamps, works great most of the time and the more simple the valve pedal the better. One of the craziest finds I've every come across is putting a clean boost in front of my SVP-CL, a so called "clean & quiet" tube preamp

I've got a Westinghouse and a Space Heater on the April list. I've got a few ideas of where I want them to go.

I'm not a big compression fan (*gasp* *Horror* *Plague* *dead kittens*) as I think the few I've used really killed my fretless tone. But I'm looking forward to see how they can both drive and be driven by both my bass as well as some of the other stuff I have lying around.

And I'm excited to see what they can do for my cigar box guitars- I've got this idea of the Westinghouse into an addrock ol' yeller for some dirty slide cigar box guitar.

I can't help but wonder. Perhaps your tone could be enhanced by the use of a transformer of some kind. Like maybe a Lightening Boy or some such thing.

Can't tell if this is a serious question or not, but in reality I'd say yes. Stacking EQ on EQ on EQ eventually starts to just smear things around and you lose definition and clarity. Not to mention gain staging becomes a problem as well.

It was half cheeky and half serious. In the SW synth/electronic music production world, I sometimes put a chain of plugins on a synth as long as your arm and I see that similar things can happen in the HW (bass) pedal world, which is part reassuring and part scary.

Well, whatever sounds good at the end of the day. But my general approach is always to try to minimize the signal chain as much as possible to achieve a certain sound. Sometimes "minimize" means everything on all at once. But sometimes it's nothing. That's what foot switches are for.

So as I mentioned earlier my parents are visiting so my dad can help me finish my basement (I know my way around a tube preamp, but carpentry and construction is way over my head) so I'm trying to get as much basement work done as possible while they're still here, which has meant putting pedals on hold for a bit. I'm taking some time off my day job so I can get more done, and I'm going to get back to pedal work for a few nights after construction work is done for the day, but I still may end up a day or two late, but still easily within the 10-day extra period I give myself on the ordering page.

I'll keep everyone posted as things go along and I have an idea of how schedule is looking, just want to keep you all informed as early as possible.

Please delete if this isn’t allowed, but would anyone be interested in buying a Westinghouse from the March batch? I realize I’ve been using pedals as a sort of crutch or excuse not to practice (the next pedal will make me a much better bassist!) and am looking to get rid of most of my pedals. Thanks.
