I don’t know how I checked out. The website was pretty new and I never used a computer before. At first I thought it was just a foldy TV.

Got my SH all settled in. Just what I needed. Excuse the not-so-tidy pedalboard. Was moving stuff around a bit. Thinking about getting some LED dampers. Bypassed a couple of the bright ones, but green and blue get particularly bright. Obviously the unearthly glow of the SH is a welcome sight.

I’m relatively new to TB so not exactly sure how the classifieds work. It says I don’t have privileges to post there. Anyway, after receiving my Space Heater, I’ve decided to sell my UA on the verb if anyone is interested.

I'm doing some reading, the main one I'm finding with the two-band controls is the 5E6, made from 1955-1957. The 1959 model Josh talks about in his article is likely a 5F6-A, which is the last tweed model made and has the three-band tone stack as well as a presence control.

So to clarify, the 5E6 is magical? Is that what I should try?

To me and many they all have their charm, I'm fondest of the 5e6 which is how I have one channel of my Bassman head spec'd the other is the original late 60's pre CBS 50 watt version. I'd love to have that tone stack if nothing else in a tube magic box.

The 5f6a is the holy grail that will make guitar tone seekers happy - it is the grand or great grand daddy of so many of today's amps.

I'm looking at the schematic for 5F6-A, it's easily doable. I would probably want to add a master volume, maybe add a switch to defeat master volume if the purists insist, but for a standalone preamp I consider master volume to be important. Presence is a negative feedback control which obviously only works if you have the power amp/output transformer so that would get tossed. So this would be two tubes, probably use 12AT7 as a "close enough" replacement for the 12AY7 in V1, five knobs (gain, treble/mid/bass, master). It would probably go in a 1590BB (like Dr. Wattson, JC Emerald, etc).

If you did a Tweed style art work or something kitschy vintage looking that would really appeal to guitar players in that ilk, dunno about bass players tho.
Seems you are still passing on the 2 band Bassman idea.

I haven't overlooked it, but you said yourself 5F6-A is what most people think when they think Bassman. Comparing the two schematics I would expect the 5E6 (2-band) to give a better response on bass though. Maybe I need to build both and see which one I like better.
