The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Currently at home and enjoying playing thru a new-to-me Quilter InterBass head, and the thought occurred to me:

Señor Sushi, if you ever got completely bored with designing and building pedals, you could undoubtedly slay micro head builds.

Sidenote, I've got two gigs coming up this weekend where I'll be taking my baby board (tuner/HPF/comp/OD/Linden/PA)... and I'm pretty sure I can run that board thru the FX loop on this sweet lil amp head for both as they'll have PA support (and no drums for the second one). The FX circuit on it is post-gain, and the InterBass's gain is dirty, so things ought to get interesting.

Doubling the capacitor values in the cathode bypass caps should do it, I'd have to try it, and you may start to wish for a HPF.

Looking at the schematics between the three (Slampegg, UA, PAX), they all have the same coupling cap value throughout, but their cathode bypass cap values change.

PAX has a 47uF cathode bypass cap on both stages, so its pre-tonestack response looks like this:

UA has 47uF on the second stage, but 100uF for the first stage cathode bypass cap, which gives it a little more ultra low-end:

Ever wonder why Slampegg has such a low output level compared to the others? Slampegg doesn't have any cathode bypass caps, so even though it has a higher plate resistor value, it's still 5dB less gain on the first stage and 9dB less gain on the second stage. Why would Ampeg design an amp like that? Well, take a look at the frequency response:

If you take either a PAX or a UA and increase the cathode bypass capacitance to 220uF you can get super close to the absurd, sub-audible low end that Slampegg gets with no cathode bypass but keeping the high output level of PAX and UA.

Whow, another user that seems to like booty.
I have the bass knob dimed on my UA, but that seems to do the job for me. I got enough lows to make my cabs dance and I do not wish for more. But I never tried the SVBT because I never was able to warm to the ampeg tone stack. Nothing wrong with playing an SVT through a Fridge, that's glorious, but anyting else and I'm not so happy with it any more.

@Sushi Box FX HPF I have! I can actually apply HPF in at least 3 places... A UA with a deep switch would be ever so cool... I am auditioning my sounds using headphones pre processing, post fader off a console. I adjust the input trims for a constant -24 which gives me peaks of -12. For me, in the age of digital boards, -12db is the new 0...

This is also my live rig. No amp... FOH channel strip and a dedicated Aux out to a healthy power amp and either a 12/6 (and sometimes sub) or a 15/6 cab. It is a reasonably neutral setup that takes EQ well.

For my testing and sound and synth patch development though, all the digital EQ, HPF and LPF, comp and gate at the console are bypassed ... I'm trying to get as close as absolutely possible to the sound in my head at the pedal board so that when I am also not providing sound for my band, the FOH guy has nothing to do except adjust for the venue.

Oh man. I am not building anything tonight. So I picked up my new head yesterday, and I just picked up my new bass 15 minutes ago. Everything I thought it would be and more.

I love the feel of the Ibanez SR, so I stepped up a model or two. Ibanez SR1600D in "autumn sunset sky" finish.

I should probably just do a "new rig day" post since I don't think I posted about my new cab when I got it :P

The head is a Genz Benz Streamliner 900. I plugged it in and ran a looper into it to verify it works yesterday, but I didn't have a bass so I didn't get to really give it a thorough test. This is my first amp that has actually had enough power to have a speakon connector instead of just 1/4" :P

Try the SVT setting on the Streamliner. That amp has a whole lotta bottom. Was messing with mine yesterday.

Awesome! I love that amp. I actually just sold mine :-) no particular reason just wanted to mix things up a little bit, try something different. It’s a good ‘un.
