Just about grabbed a Lab Rat too, but I think I’ll hold out for the SMD version of that one (hopefully) next month.

I’m digging it. It was a little shyer on low end than I preferred by itself, but I added a Mesa 610 (IIRC) cab sim behind it in my Helix, and that *really* brought it to life in the lower notes. I’ve currently got it set up for a brighter, grinding rock tone, that’s actually quite “Geddy-like”, but with its own character.

I think it’s going to be on my board for a good long while.

Good. Yes, it is not as bass centric as some but like you said, there are ways to sweeten it. I would have felt bad talking it up if you didn’t like it.

Yeah, it’s gonna be a phenomenal rock preamp for me. I’m running the DWX *fairly* clean, and the UA very clean, so the JCE fits in perfectly with its brighter grind (the way I have it set). And the more I play through it, the more I’m appreciating what it does.

@andare Great choice for tone! Good luck on getting your SH. FWIW shipping to foreign countries can be a real difficulty and all too often lead to frustration, additional expenses that customers often wrongly blame on the shipper. Shipping costs, import duties, VAT and Customs delays and associated costs not to mention the various differences between cities, buildings and neighborhoods are all factors.

I’m really looking forward to it. I absolutely love my current SMD Space Heater (which I fully plan on keeping also), and missed out on the lottery for the Ltd Edition one, so I’m stoked to finally be able to get one of the HW models.

I went with my current theme: full color artwork with white enclosure. Red LED in this one, vs the green in my current one.

So I was poking around online, procrastinating my to-do list for the night, and a friend pointed me toward teepublic and recommended I check them out for Sushi Box merch. So now I apparently have merch available?

HW refers to Hand Wired that uses higher current components and run at a higher voltage resulting in an improvement in performance. Because there is additional labor and some in materials they are more expensive.

SMD refers to circuit boards that are partially populated by automation keeping costs down. There is still some assembly and parts added with the SMD units.

I chose the Finally Tube DI instead of the Space Heater, essentially the same Tube circuit plus a great DI.

Thanks. I'm aware of the difference between hand wired and SMD since I dabble in pedal building.
My question was more about the difference in sound and performance.

I was also considering a Finally but I'm not sure I need a DI at the moment. I just want a good tube sound with some grit.

As we're talking about shipping here . . . Is USPS a good carrier in the US?
When I buy from the States and have the parcel shipped to Germany, I always dread the moment I get the tracking info for fearing it might be USPS. I recently acquired a Damnation MBD-2, which also comes via USPS. According to the tracking the parcel has been posted on Thursday, received by USPS on Friday and has not moved since.
When Mr. Sushi sends one, it's basically the same. They go to a hub (or facility) in Chicago, lie around for two days, then move to Dallas, lie around for another day, then fly to Frankfurt, hit German customs where they stick for 2-4 days and then get delivered by DHL, the total runtime of the parcel is a week in ideal circumstances, more often it's 10 days.

OTOH I bought a Heather Brown Overdrive, which was sent with UPS. It was kind of a late Christmas present from me to me, and I pulled the trigger on the 27th, in the afternoon. I was visiting Family then. On the 28th, I had to swap cars to head back home on the 29th, where I arrived in the evening only to find that UPS had an unsuccessful delivery attempt earlier that day.

IIRC, the Heather Brown pedal's shipping cost was in the ballpark of $20-30.
UPS somehow circumvents the standard customs office and they seem to do it on their own, within their system where speed is everything, whereas being a German customs clerk is a job, where you will, after doing it for a while, find it a stressful experience to watch a sloth in action.

Just FYI for you and anyone interested in a t-shirt, the TeePublic tri-blends are my favorite t-shirt cut and fabric. Soft and stretchy. I bought a friend's band shirt there a few years back, and now every spring I go on the site and do a random search like "music" or "abstract art" and buy a couple random shirts.

Every time I order from the US I get reamed with import tax, about 25% of the total value. I only do it when there are no alternatives.

Why do you consider that “reamed”? At least 20% of that is VAT that you’d pay for anything local anyways. Do you consider buying local also “getting reamed”? In the UK I can usually save money by buying from the US, even with the VAT added on. I just don’t like waiting that long

As an example, I put in a preorder in the UK for a Tech21 MP40, which goes for £369. At Sweetwater in the US it goes for $269, which is about £200. Add on £30 for shipping, and £60 for import duty, and I would still save around £80 over buying local. (I’m still put in my preorder locally due to lack of stock though).

When I buy from the UK, I'll have to pay VAT on import.
However, the chaps in the UK will subtract the UK VAT from their price when they send the product.
German VAT is 19% and IIRC the UK has 20% - so in the end it'll cost just a bit more because the VAT gets added to the price including shipping cost (unless I buy something really small and really expensive where the 1% tax difference will outweigh the shipping cost).

I'm not entirely sure how the TAX works in the US. Are the prices on a Sushi pedal with or without tax?
Does a customer from the US pay $180 plus shipping on a UA or are there taxes that will be applied later?
AFAIK in the US it is common to list prices witout tax in a shop and then adding that at checkout, but I don't remember that too well.

Because I don't save money buying from the US. The Polish zloty is weaker and weaker. The conversion rate from dollars and euros kills me every time.
