In that case, I do not think I have ever set my HPF higher than 100 hz (and that includes using it on guitar where I set it higher). For the LPF side, I do not think I have ever gone lower than around 5khz. Noting I mainly use the LPF to get rid of some effect noise and string noise when I plug in an acoustic bass. Noting that I am one datapoint, but absolutely agree that the range on some of them is much larger than it needs to be.

The first post in this thread may also be worth a read if you have not already. I know it helped me when I was first buying one. High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

Still need to do thorough testing, but so far this thing sounds freaking great.

EDIT: in case there was anyone wondering, this will sell for $180 when it's ready.

Is that for the entire pedal or just for the tube??

I KID, I KID!! Let's just hope that six months from now that post is still a joke….

I KID, I KID!! Let's just hope that six months from now that post is not funny and $180 is a great deal on a single 12AX7.
Yeah I thought about cancelling the backordered 50 tubes, but then I realized if I leave the order in I get those 50 for the usual price instead of whatever they'll sell for then price. I asked when ETA was on the backordered tubes, they said late April, so we'll see how it goes.

From what I understand they actually get some of their parts from Russia. So I'm sure it's a combination of
  • all the Russian brands selling out so people have no alternative besides JJ
  • JJ is a smaller manufacturer than New Sensor and can't meet the entire global demand
  • JJ uses some Russian components in their manufacturing that they can no longer get
Am I optimistic that things will work out and I will be able to source tubes for June and onward? I absolutely am.

Am I in the process of making a backup plan in case I can't get tubes anymore? I absolutely am.

And: some manufacturers are buying as many tube as they can "while supply last" from non russian suppliers, therefore creating supply shortage. I saw one preamp builder announcing on Facebook he just bought 2 years worth of non russian preamp tubes because he anticipates a shortage he is contributing to create. Ironic?

Unfortunately it is completely rational behavior, but it does further any shortages. His self interest is in keeping his business running so he orders a little extra to cover himself. As more and more take the same action, the shortage and supply chain lag in responding to the shortage builds up. You can generally expect that it will clear itself one way or another, but one of the problems with shortages/supply chain issues is that the rational action by the end user often contributes to the problem.

This is the kind of thing business schools courses teach in case studies all the time. I could see the tube market being an interesting case study if anyone writing those happens to find out about it.

Edit: I see on Sweetwater and others that additional JJ 12AX7s are expected to be available in April. Makes me wonder how big of a problem this will end up actually turning into. I understand that a large supply of tubes (and inputs into non-Russian made tubes even) has been cutoff. What I have not seen any real info on is what existing stock of tubes looks like. Entirely possible that there is enough there to cover the short term run once things are shipped to the right places.

I get it. Frankly if I had the capital (and my wife okayed it) I probably would have done the same thing. I rely on tubes for my business. If tubes aren't available, I can't do business. It's as simple as that.

Yeah most places are saying late April for new JJ stock. I'm hoping that is true and everything can get figured out by then.

I'm wondering how much of the tube shortage is profiteering. Mike Matthews started it with his statement, and while New Sensor not exporting any tubes sounds like it would be terrible news for EHX, I'm certain EHX has stock of tubes in the US that they can now move very quickly and for higher than typical prices. This is speculation, but if I were a shady businessman I would absolutely do it. All the youtube videos and articles I've seen have been largely clickbait with speculation and no real information aside from Mike's statement.

We'll see how it all goes.

So…how many hours until May preorders are opened?! Okay, kidding, but I bet they don’t stay open long.
I want to thoroughly verify HW Finally, HWUA, and SMD Lab Rat so I can get them in the offerings for the May batch, then I'll open it up. Probably closer to the end of this month or beginning of April. I don't like having too many preorders open at once.

Same here.

Nathan, if it helps, I'll take the HWUA sans tube.
I appreciate it, and sans tube will continue to be an option for those that have their own stash ready to go. But for those that don't I have no problem continuing to supply tubes, and I can almost guarantee I buy tubes for less than anyone else has them right now. So if you have tubes on hand, feel free to save yourself $20 and order without a tube. If not, you may have trouble finding a tube for $20 or less these days. I have a supply of NOS tubes I use in my personal amps and effects, when I buy my JJ's those are for you guys and always will be, so don't feel bad buying them from me.

April order numbers, for the curious:
  • Handwired Slampegg - 10
  • Handwired Space Heater - 6
  • Underground Accelerator - 6
  • Handwired Lab Rat - 5
  • Echosaurus - 3
  • SBVT - 2
  • Finally - 2
  • Space Heater - 2
  • Slampegg - 1
  • Dr. Wattson - 1
  • Fluffy Kitten - 1
  • JC Emerald - 1
In addition there are 6 handwired orders held over from January that have been waiting for handwired release. I am planning on building those with the April batch.

So I just had a 10 minute go of the new-to-me but older version of the London Underground (original full size tube version I think). Effect path is passive PJ basses (EMG GZR PJ) - compressor - London Underground - VT Bass Deluxe - Mackie foldback speaker.

Sounds really nice. I don;t hear it as being bass shy really. Armed with the knowledge this has a Fender style tone stack (0 - 10 - 0 being roughly flat EQ response) I dialed in a nice, growly overdrive tone with Bass - 9 oclock, mids - 3 oclock and treble at 7 oclock. Gain at 12 oclock and master set to match unity volume with pedal off. Really nice, growly but smooth overdrive tone. My usual overdrive tone comes from an EBS Billy Sheehan Deluxe drive pedal (it's also the compressor in this chain. The EBS definitely has a modern overdrive that is tonally very similar to the Pearce BP1 it is modelled after. The LU is quite different - it's a woollier overdrive but it doesn't get muddy at the setting I have it set to so nice addition.

The tone worked well with both solo'd P pickup and 50/50 combined PJ. I think it definitely also added a little girth or heft to the overall sound, or that may have also been me not quite matching unity signals but for my 2nd foray into SB pedals I like this one. I really liked the Slampegg too but could cover the tone with the VT Deluxe alone so you know how it goes....1 out for 1 in!!!

The LU is different and usable enough that it can stay. Thank you for your creations Mr. Sushi Box !!!
