The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Just curious what type of HPF LPF are you thinking of using?
I haven't designed it yet, but the goal is for this to still be an all-tube signal path, so I'm looking at a passive HPF/LPF with a tube stage for makeup gain. It would be simpler to design it with opamps, but nobody would forgive me if I had opamps in a tube preamp :p I would want to build up a separate prototype of the HPF/LPF and take some measurements to make sure I'm getting a useful range out of the filters so I'm not rolling it into a big expensive design without hearing it.
 
I have so many things to think about right now besides filters, but my brain won't :P

So I know this is back a hundred or so pages in the thread but I don't want to look for it, what's a useful range for HPF and LPF? I know Broughton goes 25Hz - 190Hz on HPF and 330Hz - 20kHz on LPF, VFE is the only other common HPF/LPF combo I see and they do 47Hz - 2.2kHz on HPF and 470Hz - 22kHz on LPF. Fdeck seems to be a popular standalone HPF among DIYers but that only goes 35Hz - 140Hz. How much range is needed to be really useful?

Are you building it specifically for bass or do you expect that there will be Guitar/Keyboard users? I definitely set my HPF/LPF up differently on bass than I do on guitar.

Another question... are you just doing a cutoff slope (similar to Broughton HPF/LPF) or are you doing a boost and cutoff (similar to Broughton RFE). I currently own/use both. The RFE is harder to work with, but yields better results after some tinkering (at least to my ear).

I would lean more toward just bass for this DI. HPF/LPF are useful on guitar, but it seems like bassists use them a lot more than guitarists in general. Personally when I play guitar I don't use HPF/LPF at all, though I'm admittedly fairly simple in my gear needs. So I guess it depends on how much would need to change to make it useful for guitarists. I don't want something that works for both but isn't great for either, I'd rather it be excellent for one.

In that case, I do not think I have ever set my HPF higher than 100 hz (and that includes using it on guitar where I set it higher). For the LPF side, I do not think I have ever gone lower than around 5khz. Noting I mainly use the LPF to get rid of some effect noise and string noise when I plug in an acoustic bass. Noting that I am one datapoint, but absolutely agree that the range on some of them is much larger than it needs to be.

For bass, I find Broughton's frequency ranges pretty useful throughout. Though for the HPF I never go above 80 Hz unless I'm using some resonance to create a bump around 100-120 Hz (RFE).

I wouldn't have a high pass start at anything higher then 20-22hz:

low strings:
F#: 23.1hz
B: 30.9hz
E: 41.2

I run with a low B now but did have my dingwall setup with a low F# for a while. I can understand guitar effects that have a low cut around 80hz or so but its my pet peeve when bass effects have it set to 40hz or so.

Hi , I am new to Sushibox and have a question for all knowledgeable folks here . I recently received my SBVT that I purchased from a fellow TB member and really dig it ! It has fantastic tube deliciousness and is a wicked preamp that will be always on on my board .
My question is for future reference and is , who makes the 12AX7 tubes ? I am happy with the original and if they ever need replaced I would like to use the same exact tubes . Thanks

I've been there, too. Then I got to experiment with a variable HPF and found that in a band mix, I sound best when I set the Frequency around 62Hz.
With the high pass on, I was able to boost low frequencies even harder, getting more bass but less mud.
 
So the good news of the day is I got the boards in for the SMD version of Lab Rat. Initial tests are promising, I want to get it boxed up and do more thorough testing before committing to making it available for order.

The bad news of the day is my tube supplier has informed me they won't be able to fill my order for 100 JJ 12AX7 like they had initially promised. They will be shipping 50 of them now and backordering the other 50 until who-knows-when. So I still plan to do business as usual for the April and May batches, and after that is kind of up in the air.

Well that stinks.

I wonder if Slovakia, where I believe JJ is headquartered (which is next door to Ukraine), get's some of it's parts from Ukraine.

Undoubtedly they are feeling the pressure of war in their vicinity.

From what I understand they actually get some of their parts from Russia. So I'm sure it's a combination of
  • all the Russian brands selling out so people have no alternative besides JJ
  • JJ is a smaller manufacturer than New Sensor and can't meet the entire global demand
  • JJ uses some Russian components in their manufacturing that they can no longer get
Am I optimistic that things will work out and I will be able to source tubes for June and onward? I absolutely am.

Am I in the process of making a backup plan in case I can't get tubes anymore? I absolutely am.
