In the "original lineup" I had working titles for each design and the eventual production names were crowdsourced in a naming contest. These included London Underground, Slampegg Bee Pre, Dr. Wattson, and Sunnday Drive. My best guess would be that the person who thought of Slampegg (I would have to go back and look up who it was) saw my working title of "AMP-EGG" and thought leaving the extra 'g' on there looked cool and edgy.
Black Eye was the suggestion of a friend who worked as a barista in high school; I was going to have a Black Eye and a Red Eye (never ended up happening) as coffee references. Particle Accelerator and Wrecking Ball were the only ones I thought of myself. PA was based on the Alembic F-2B, and an alembic is an antiquated chemistry tool, so I thought "what's a modern chemistry tool? Particle Accelerator." Wrecking Ball came from my usual game of associations: Dual Rectifier -> Dual Rec -> Dual Wreck -> Wrecking Ball.
Oh Lab Rat was mine as well. Obviously it's a Rat, but with a tube, so I went tube -> test tube -> lab -> Lab Rat.

A gate took care of this with my SB pedals. The Donner Soph Gate works well for this (I can't believe I'm actually recommending a Donner pedal!)
I've also noticed that sometimes changing the pedal order or even different patch cables or different power supplies helped with this as well. Sometimes a buffer between the two helps, sometimes not. I've also had completely quiet SB pedals act up when other brand solid state preamp pedals were activated. There's no rhyme or reason to the noise, and I've had other brand tube preamp pedals have this issue.
OK, if it has 6N21B tube when i'll replace it, one day, can i put a 12AX7 in place without any problems? I'm not a tube guy so those questions come up you know.
I'll open it up when i have the time. Thanks again. Now all i need to find is a good compressor pedal.
Nope. They're not interchangeable. Also I believe that the old mini-tubes were hardwired in and not in a socket, so they don't facilitate replacement at all.
The 6N21B Mini tubes aren't socketed, so they are soldered right onto the circuit board, and not easily replaced.
Sending it back to Sir Sushi to replace with the same tube type is your best option, unless you are really handy with a Soldering iron and confident in your skills!

As mentioned above 6N21B is not interchangeable with 12AX7, that would require a completely different circuit board. If the tube were to go bad you could send it back to me and I could replace it, the tube is soldered directly to the board and I don't recommend doing it yourself unless you're an experienced solderer.
The good news there is that the 6N21B is an old military tube so they were designed to be robust and last for a very long time. I've personally never seen/heard one fail, and they should last for decades at the least.

FWIW @Shifter_four some of us actually prefer the mini tube versions over the 12ax7, I preferred my original Particle Accelerator over a PAX. The X suffix on model names denoted the 12ax7 version, plus in the earlier pedals @Sushi Box FX offered finishes and options he no longer does for various reasons.

@bassbrad I put together my alternate version of Smoke Signal II last night, no dice. I have one last hail mary design to try out before I admit temporary defeat and send an apologetic email to everyone who ordered a HW Smoke Signal for May.
I'm moving forward with the assumption that this final design will work, but I will be doing thorough testing and if it has any inkling of a problem I will hold off on release.
So the bad news is the problem hasn't been fixed yet, but I guess the good news is I caught the problem before shipping a dozen units.

That one either has actual Altoids or adapters for USB & headphones that I use all the time, there is some order in that apparent chaos despite what my wife insists. As if her desk is much better.
Bah Humbug, I'm confident you WILL solve this problem and deliver us a spectacular Two Meat Smoke Signal we will be proud to play through.
I've had 3 days with my new Slampegg and it's a winner for me. I definitely prefer it over my Tech 21 or Zoom sims. With a bit of optical compression in front of the Slampegg, I can get touch sensitivity and heft that is closer to my full tube amps. I haven't settled on any settings yet because it's capable of more than just one or two cool sounds.
As I was tweaking files to get the latest Smoke Signal II design ready to order I had a thought: I like blinding bright LEDs. There should be no question whether the LED is on or off. I'm aware not everyone feels that way, and one of the Smoke Signals I took in for the UA clean channel mod had gaffer's tape over the LEDs.
So I moved stuff around and there will be internal trimpots to adjust the brightness of the LEDs now. Just thought it could be helpful.

Not quite as different as I wanted it to be, but it will be different. The goal was to get away from the Verellen design and do something more original, and this design still accomplishes that. They will be similar, but the differences should be noticeable. I'm not sure if they'll be different enough that you would need to own both though, as they will definitely cover the same territory.
