The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

My wife just soldered up her first handwired circuit board. I think she did a pretty great job. She's not as fast as I am (yet) so most of the HW builds this month will still be done by me, but she'll be doing a couple to help me catch up with my schedule.

Alright, here's what I'm thinking for June:
  • 20 build slots
  • any number of handwired (up to and including 20)
  • no Smoke Signals
  • raw/simple and raw/full color artwork only, no black or white finishes
This is the best compromise I could think of to offer a good number of builds but not let it completely take over the free time I have planned for other stuff in the month.

Also fun fact, I can put together a handwired UA a lot faster than I can put together an SMD Smoke Signal.

Nope, powdercoating is one of the more time-consuming processes of the build, and limiting everything to raw enclosures (just a clear coat) saves a lot of time. This won't be a permanent thing, just a time-saving measure for June.

I'm glad I went overboard with ordering 3 pedals for May, and didn't spread it out to June :D Impulse buying FTW!

I was thinking I wanted a Smoke Signal, and maybe later after they get sorted out I might still get one, but I have a Blue Tube 903 pedal that I was using for a preamp with a 12AU7 tube that I could put the 12AX7 back in and use for an OD and just get a UA to replace it as the preamp. I very rarely need an heavy OD/distortion sound so if I am being honest, I dont REALLY need a SS, a UA and the Blue Tube will work perfectly fine.

I just peeked at the schematic, and I agree UA is going to be closest simply because of the tonestack. The Blue Tube runs starved plate with an op-amp before the tube to push it into drive.

IMHO those Chandler / Butler / Tube Works / Real Tube / Blue / Cream or other "Tube" boxes never sounded as good as the PA, PAX, UA or any other SushiBox creation.

Those starved plate pedals have been around for decades by one name or another essentially the same design, not terrible but not great either. The same can be said for the ART Tube MP series of boxes that sound good but do not compare to the Finally for actual tube warmth and depth.

I just got my Finally HW and it sounds really good! I was about to compare the DI out to the 1/4”, to see what the Lightning Boy Audio transformer does to the sound, and noticed that the DI output was way low. Like -20dB. Is that normal? Compared to other DI boxes. I have it’s way low. Is there an internal switch maybe?

Also, my Finally didn’t have a Lightning Boy Audio sticker on it. Is there another transformer in my unit?

Maybe these are questions for @Sushi Box FX himself, but I thought I share it if some else wonders.

It sounds like the Finally DI is at mic level? That is normal for some DIs, the level doesn't need to be as high with balanced XLR. You'll probably need to feed it into a mic preamp.

Or it's broken :D I don't have one so can't say for sure.
