The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

The deciding factor should be your need/want from the preamp. Are you looking for a specific amp, player or era bass tone ~ OR ~ something that has a tube warmth and tone you can make your own?

If you are satisfied but want to add some tube goodness or gain = Space Heater or Finally DI
Ampeg big stack Rock and Grind = SBVT
Classic Rock + R&B tones = Slampegg Bee
Edge on Rock Tones that blast through then consider Dr Wattson or JC Emerald
For a versatile clean to warm sound the Underground Accelerator is the right choice.

These days I mostly just play at church…someone help me bc I can’t decide what to get. I’d say today I’m stuck between the Watson and the Finally if not both (my wife is going to murder me), but it tends to change daily. What do you have and why do you like it?
Pedals are small and they all look alike. She’ll never know. Do it.

Well now I gotta ask about the tone differences between the Wattson and the jc emerald. I’ve never tried a jcm style preamp with bass.
@Ryan L. it's your turn to be the enabler. I don't have a Dr. Wattson, I am probably missing out. But the JC Emerald is fantastic on bass. I bought it for my guitar but I use it on bass more. It is pretty true to the JCM tone and rings up clean with plenty tube warmth before getting gritty.

The DWX sounds bigger, fuller, and warmer than the JCE. IMO the two don’t overlap much, if at all, and sound quite different. I use the DWX for more clean sounds, and the JCE for an overdriven rock tone. The Wattson has a bigger low end than the JCE also. And if you were to ask me which one was my favorite, I’d say “yes”, simply because I love each one for what they do.

@Ryan L & @Killing Floor I'm so close to ordering a JC Emerald and y'all ain't helping. I really don't have room and I have an odd emotional attachment to my current Marshall in a box solution.
The JCE is quite possibly my favorite slightly overdriven rock sound I’ve ever had. It does the touch sensitive overdrive thing better than any pedal or amp I’ve owned in the past. Simply changing my right hand attack takes it from clean to overdrive—and it’s a very, very nice sounding overdrive.

It is a little shy on low end compared to the DWX and UAX, but I remedied that by following it with a Mesa 610 cab sim on my Helix. My Genzler Re/Q also worked great for it, but I don’t have room for that huge pedal with my current setup.

Just don’t check your phone the day ordering opens.
I'm pretty sure I can resist as I just ordered a Future Impact so that ought to quench my thirst for a bit.

Still awaiting the return of my SS and a couple of back shelved designs from @Sushi Box FX anyhow.

I get it. No reason to stoke a GAS fire.
Oops, guess who came out to play today?

If you don't know what you want the Space Heater rarely disappoints. Finally is a Space Heater with a DI output, Underground Accelerator is a Space Heater with a Fender tonestack. If you know you want the Ampeg sound absolutely go for a Slampegg Bee Pre, if you know you want the Hiwatt sound absolutely go for Dr. Wattson. Otherwise, SH/UA/Finally is my one-size-fits-most suggestion.

I was going to suggest the Space Heater as well... I just got my my first box of Sushi, an HW Space Heater... at first play, I didn't get it, it was just ok... then I put it after my Cali76 and it came to life. I absolutely love that I can get a barely there dirty sound, or push it for more, if I want. It's making me seriously think about selling my MBD2. Yep, it's a mess, I was moving things around to see where it sounds best. I'll definitely have to get a different power supply, because daisy chained off a One Spot is noisy, not too bad, but it's there
I'll be using it for church too. I'm already considering a UA.

Like i mentioned above, just got my HWSH... I was thinking about doing the same and possibly a UA..

Are you running them set the same, or different gain on each?

I’m running them both clean, so the gains are similar, and master volumes set to roughly unity, so I guess they’re set pretty much the same. The hand wired and SMD versions do sound different (the HW sounds a bit bigger), but the two of them together sound huge. They even make the digital preamps in my Helix sound fuller.

My Space Heather arrived today, but I'm out of town until Friday, so will test it this weekend!
Looking forward to hearing what you think!

I like the JC Emerald, and while a number of bassists (as you've seen) really enjoy it, I personally consider it more of a guitar thing. It hasn't sold anywhere near as well as DW and it covers the same general gain territory so I've come really close to getting rid of it, but I still regularly get at least one order for it every month, and with Black Eye and Wrecking Ball gone there really isn't anything in my lineup that would woo our 6-string brethren into Sushiland. So I'll continue to keep it around for now.

I was thinking about modifying JC Emerald to get more low end out of it, but I'm worried that it would start to just be a slightly different DW. So the circuit remains as-is per the original Marshall schematic.

That will be hard to do as I still haven't decided what day ordering will open :P I'll probably start poking at the website tomorrow, though I'll likely need @Sonicblaze's help to get everything set up since I'm limiting models (which I know how to do), limiting finishes (which I don't know how to do) and limiting tube options (which I don't know how to do).

I still need to go through and do a formal count on how many JJ 12AX7 I have on hand. I'm positive I have more than enough for May builds, but June will most likely have to be tubeless. The alternative of course being that my tube supplier started carrying Psvane tubes, which I love, at about double the price of JJ tubes, so I could look at offering those for a little more money if people needed tubes.

Still awaiting the return of my SS and a couple of back shelved designs from @Sushi Box FX anyhow.
I just checked tracking on the new (v3) Smoke Signal boards, they just cleared customs in Hong Kong. I'll probably see them this weekend, I will of course keep you posted.

As for the shelved designs (Bassdude, Tweed Blazer, Greenhouse, and More), I'm actually a lot further along in the May batch than I expected to be at this point, I'll see if I can take an hour or so and get some boxes milled out and get things boxed this weekend. This doesn't mean they'll be available for immediate order, but it's hard to really evaluate a design without having it boxed up. And I am planning on sending at least a couple of them around for some unbiased third parties to try out and get feedback. You know, the way I probably should have been doing this the whole time.
