Just as a heads up for everyone, yesterday was my last day of work for the year at my day job, so I won't be spending long hours in front of a computer until January. As such I will be on this forum less, and you may see more delays in my replies to messages and emails. I am still getting them and I will still reply, but maybe only once per day, and certainly not on the holidays themselves.

I do have a couple repairs on the bench that have been there for an embarrassingly long time, and those are my top priority right now. Secondary to that I may have a handful of "just for fun" builds I put together over the holidays. Not because I need to or because it's expected of me, but because I like building pedals, and when I have free time to do whatever I want, that's what I want to do

Thanks...@lomo and @4Mal... Im thinking my most flexible choice may be to pickup another HW UA. Then maybe putting a lower gain tube in it. Then I can run 1UA w/tone AND/OR 1 UA w/o tone OR can configure 1 for added drive or different tonestack setting when needed.

That strikes me as a rational solution, one have considered myself. I wouldn't bother with the lower gain tube myself. You have a gain control after all.

I think I found my secret sauce with my 12AU7 equipped Space Heater. Really digging the clean subtle compression I get when the gain is cranked.

One thing I've noticed is that each of these sound great when pushed due to the subtle compression I mentioned, but have different outcomes. Almost makes me want to have 3 on the board for benefits each provide. But since I only have one, AU7 is my go to always on pre. Clean and fat.

...all this makes me wanna 'speriment with running my More (with a 12ax7 for juiced clean gain) into a SH or UA (with a 12au7 for more cleanish range) as an uber 2-stage tubular compressor......

I’ve got one with a 12AX7, another with a 12AT7, and the last with the 12AU7. For general all around “cleanish” use I really like the 12AU7. So if I could only have one that would be my choice. Still has plenty of oomph on tap for use as a preamp.

1. Is it normal for the pedal to get quite warm?
2. Is the TS BP on in the up position?
3. Why is there a big volume drop with the TX BP is in the down position?

2.& 3. Disabling the tone stack creates a volume increase. This is normal for a UA with tone stack bypass.

1. Yes. There's a tube in there running at high voltage. That's normal.
2. Whichever one is louder is tonestack bypass, because (3)
3. Passive tonestacks are inherently lossy circuits, which is to say that there's a considerable amount of volume lost when a signal goes through all the EQ stages. This is completely normal it's and why most amps have multiple tube stages, typically one before a tone stack, and one after to make up the volume lost.

Same for me when I got it.
Think of it this way : the label indicates what the switch does, and not which way to push it.
Up is on = the switches does what the label says. Hope it makes sense

IMO Nathan has an uneasy relationship with switches and labeling. Pedal by pedal ... go by ear...
