The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Nathan, I’m very curious what results you had in swapping out the 12au for the 12ax in the More. I stupidly didn’t tube roll when I had the deep dish. I’ve never really bonded with 12au. 5751 seems to be my fav.

Right here

If you're ever playing around with More and want it to kick harder, you can swap V1 for a 12AX7 (stock is a 12AU7). This takes you from a +24dB max boost to a +33dB max boost and stays clean.

I'll explain why I was playing with this eventually.

I'll have more details as it progresses, but the general idea is a two channel tube preamp, active 4-band EQ, cabsim, and D.I. output. It will be pretty neat. After a year of on-and-off back-and-forth we finally nailed down the base tone of the preamp, so the next steps should hopefully go fairly smoothly. The goal is to have a fully-functioning unit to show off at NAMM 2023, then get it set up to produce on a larger scale and formally release shortly afterward.

Is this lil’ number gonna have a tone stack of some sort too? Active EQ after analog EQ is how I’m currently using the Slampegg and it’s a winner!

@melloncollie an Underground Accellerator into a Mesa Subway DI+ is very, very nice as a live solution. Putting a Hand Wired Space Heater in the efx loop of the Mesa makes it that much better. I have also run just the Mesa with the Space Heater in the Efx loop. Still very, very nice!

The Deep Switch, HPF and Voicing Controls on the D-800 and DI+ really work. Adding some Sushi Box warmth, sweetens the deal...

I personally did not bond with the WD-800. For me the D-800+ was the sweet spot in the Subway line up.

Slampegg mini into either Ictineo or Sholz Rockman Instrument EQ is doing the nasty for me right now. I tried my White Instruments and Rane EQs but the SR&D is special.

Yes. there is something very special about the Mesa/Sushi combo.
I have been running my Space Heater -> Particle Accelerator -> Subway DI -> Quilter BB800 and it gives me so much sweet spot to dial in for my core tone.

especially with the Deep Switch, it totally sweetens the deal!

It was way louder, which is exactly what I was going for ;) It was for my way-too-early-to-even-announce project "Bento Box".

Nope, I don't think it needs it. The active EQ in the tube preamp sounds excellent already, it's something I had never done before and I really like how it turned out.

Oh and I got these back today from @TonyP- so I can post pictures. These are two different but similar preamp prototypes that I sent him to try. I wanted it to be a blind test so I could make sure it was an unbiased opinion, so I made them look identical.

Ishtar Terra is one of the continents found on the planet Venus, so it seemed like a good name as the Ishtar Terra preamp will be one of the pieces that make up the Venus X.

I watched the first live stream and I distinctly remember my eyes widening when you mentioned the Venus X.
I'm gonna sound like a broken record but I'm really interested in seeing the Furthermore come to fruition. I understand that is still some way away, but the Tony Puleo preamp nearly scratches the itch.
And then so does Dreamcatcher.
I'm 50 in January - I might have to put in my order to the "boss" now.

Just got my Space Heater and it sounds great. However i am getting a whiny high pitch sound, kind of like interferance, in the background. Could this be a power issue as i am only using it on 9v standard pedal supply?
As soon as i plugged it into my board it began and it wasn't there before. Has anyone had any similiar issues with tube pedals before??

*FIXED*

I tried it with a separate power supply and there is no whiny sound now. All sorted :D

It often depends on what other pedals you use, the order of the pedals and if you are using a daisy chain again the pedals used and the order of the pedals on the daisy chain. Using good quality cables is a must. Using too much boost or gain can lead to noise issues as will extreme tone settings, just like any other tube amp. Another issue is there is a warm up period for the tube pedals of at least 30 seconds to several minutes depending on your power supply and the complexity and number of tubes, at first they can be noisy until fully warmed up. More tubes and HW or Hand Wired pedals take a bit longer to warm up in my experience.

Beware, @Sushi Box FX can be habit forming, like crisps it's hard to eat just one.

So, here we have a guy from Texas talking about crisps, the British for potato chips. What is going on here? I hear enough of this stuff from my Liverpudlian wife...is there no way to escape this??? :D

Curse of 10+ years of world travels with many international musicians, I tend to adapt to and pick up jargon, slang, customs and profanity in many languages and locales. Plus I pay attention to where members are from, it keeps things interesting.

Fun fact, some places I went in the 80's and 90's were not so friendly to Americans but being Texan was seen as different. Always so much fun to learn the misconceptions and play with them.

Ah the english words lost in translation :D i went to usa recently and got a burrito and chips for takeaway.. You can imagine my horror when i got a bag of dorritos with it! :(

Depending on the take away burrito place the fried potatoes might have been interesting, or they might have killed a Brit.

American 'french' fries are nothing compared to the different versions in the UK, of course they vary widely here too - a few good mostly horrid. That is why I get something else, anything instead, fried okra, onion rings even fried pickles.

Then we have the madness of the various state fairs where frying unusual foods has been the rage for decades Twinkies, Snickers and all sorts of other madness.

The key to good "fries" and fish and chips is lard. Of course that is no longer acceptable in a healthy society. Even my wife has said lard is a no-no.

We travel to England in the early '90s and I was disappointed in the pubs that were specializing in curried dishes. It was not what I was looking forward to.

There is a fish and chip shop in Langley, BC that we used to travel to. I don't know what they were using in their fryers but, it did taste good.

Asking advice for next pedal...love my UA. Use it in 2 contexts....
1 Tonestack off(ie space heater circuit).
2. Tonestack on (generally when I play with a pick).

I require both configurations during a set. At this point I flip the UA tonestack toggle and meticulously reset the master at points I know are the same output. Doing this mid set is not ideal. So... I think my options for a second pedal may be....
1. Another UA
2. previous Space Heater if price it right.
3. MORE

Q: Will I be just as happy or(more) with the More as I would with a Space Heater circuit??
Pretty much running the Space Heater circuit fairly clean with master and gain at about 9oclock.
Q: What effect does stacking Space Heater/UA or More/UA have compared to me just running the UA as I am now???
Q: Suggestions or other suggestions ?
Thanks for any feedback!

-If you run your UA VERY clean, IME you'll be even More happier with More
-Running >1 tube in a circuit may make it more finicky in terms of noise. It can work beautifully & quietly, but a properly isolated power supply & attention to gain stages (not too over the top) become more critical. Also the More needs about 500mA to run, and more during warmup. If you're powering with a CIOKS 7 there'll be no issue, but many other power supplies may not push enough electrons , depending on what other pedals are in your chain. Also, More entails more rubles than a UA....and there's a UA FS on the S-Box garage sale page for 180. (SMD, black graphics on grey).

I have
HWLE Space Heater
Space Heater
UA ( SMD) with tone stack defeat...
More.

The Space Heater is capable of a very subtle bit of drive. Ya know the 'Put a little hair on that' thing ? Space Heater is perfection for a completly transparent bit of drive. It can go further into drive but the mild is peefect for me.

More... is squeaky clean gain with some sweet tubey stuff... I run mine at the end of the chain as a Master Volume with special sauce. It is a subtle thing.

Personally ... HW Space Heater provides most of what More does and unlike More, can do more...

Am I giving up More - no f&way... I like what it does in my chain.

My HWLE Space Heater is on the block (shameless plug). I'll likely replace it with another UA with tonestack defeat switch. SMD Space Heater will live in the EFx loop of a Subway DI+...

I should probbly note - I have two very different bamds and 2 very different pedal boards... Mesa, Space Heater, HX Stomp XL, Future Impact, Spectrum, MorningStar is just the thing for my vocal pop band.

The moslty SBFX board is for my rockin' R&B, funky blues and Zydeco thing.

Thanks...@lomo and @4Mal... Im thinking my most flexible choice may be to pickup another HW UA. Then maybe putting a lower gain tube in it. Then I can run 1UA w/tone AND/OR 1 UA w/o tone OR can configure 1 for added drive or different tonestack setting when needed.
