The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Those of you who use a compressor, do you run it before or after your Sushi Box? This is mainly aimed at people with the UA/Slampegg, been running a compressor into the front end of either to help saturate it a little but curious about trying it the other way too.

I use my Elementary and UA/JCE pedals as preamps, so I'm looking for a fairly consistent tone out of them. I run them after my compression so I can run the gain higher and stay at the edge of clipping. If I wanted it to be more of an effect where I could control the amount of breakup with the dynamics of my playing, I would put the compressor after.

I compress before my UA and Slampegg - my chain:
Peterson Tuner>Hagerman Tube Comp>UA>Slampegg>BossCH3>Delay>EHX Neo Reverb>BBE Sonic Max>Finally DI> to the house and Amp
Having the Finally at the end of the chain allows me to take advantage of the 1/4" tube pre out jack and gives it additional tube enhancement. I tried the comp at the end of the chain and it sounded really bad, I lost dynamic range and got more noise.
I really think the comp at the front is the way to go, especially if you have effects that rely on the instrument to trigger them, like an octave pedal or pedal synth.

@DingwallDingus I actually run compression after my Sushis (UA, and LU). My compression is used for peak limiting only, so I want it at the end of the chain, after all the pedals that can potentially create those spikes. I run my Sushi *just* on the edge of breakup, so it can contribute to some peaking, too, if I'm not mindful.

If I want to send the Sushis into proper overdrive/breakup, I have some sort of OD in front to do that, rather than a compressor.

I run compression first with my UA, mainly because I'm used to using these types of pedals as a preamp most of the time so it's habit.

I get better touch sensitivity out of my UA and Elementary when I run compression after them.

@Sushi Box FX Just for financial planning purposes, what's the approximate timeline on the Single Slice? Available by Christmas? :D
Solid question. I'm on the second prototype and I like it, but it needs a couple tweaks, and I keep getting distracted. The tweaks won't take long, but I need to carve out time for it. I like to think available by Christmas is doable, but maybe ask again in a couple weeks.

Will slice have both input and output game controls?
On most 2 or 3 knob compressors, the compression knob is actually the input gain before the compression circuit. Parameters like threshold, knee, attack and knee are fixed, usually on reasonably gentle values so you can use it for light compression. When you up the gain, you reach the threshold sooner and more compression is applied.

I don't know any details on the Slice, but this is how it often works with simple compression pedals.

Nope, just output gain and compression. I tried an input gain control on the first prototype and it wasn't as useful as I thought it would be so I scrapped it on the second.

@Sushi Box FX
Have you ever considered building a bass fly rig? I’m thinking combining a UA, Slampegg, a Slice and a DI all in one box.

No offense but I think this is precisely what Nathan is all about. Trust in the process. Problem with combining everything is that there's always going to be someone that misses out lol.
