The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

What are your factory sushi pedals to stack together?
Some of the most popular pairings are:
  • Underground Accelerator + More
  • Underground Accelerator+ Finally
  • Slampegg + More
  • More + Finally
Pretty much any preamp paired with More or Finally.

@Sushi Box FX
Have you ever considered building a bass fly rig? I’m thinking combining a UA, Slampegg, a Slice and a DI all in one box.
Nope, my experience is that it's too hard to please everyone with a single box. An all-in-one box like that would need too many variations to please enpugh people to generate sales, and it would be a huge headache for me on top of being very expensive.

I am though I was daisy chaining them of a single supply and the dodgy supply is now defunct so need to get another! (thanks 1spot recommendations)

I was running both at the end like I said but then changed to having one at the end and the other before my reverb/EQ inspired by the sushi greenhouse prototype idea and I preferred that set up a lot more (slight pun intended)
Thanks Tay, and apologies for late reply! I too like the idea of the greenhouse!

I’ve been holding out for the Grand Slampegg (especially with a custom finish), but got a bit impatient so have a JC Emerald on the way. I liked how the original sounded but too much drop in bass. Ready to give the newer one a shot.
@Sushi Box FX did a nice job with the tone switch options. Sounds phat and growly on bass with the Deep up and Brite down.

I'm curious about the JCE, but not enough to click "buy". My UA and DC are still scratching my tonal itch just as thoroughly satisfactorily as they did during their respective honeymoon periods.........my cash is being stockpiled in anticipation of single slice and/or possibly furthermore.........

The JCE has the JCM800 tone and feel and the added tonal features help if feel like other Marshall amps like earlier Plexi style models as well as the rare but remarkable Major aka Bass200. It has a great voice and nice saturation but the Marshall sound is not everyone's cup of tea. On bass I run the Deep on/brite off with the gain just before crunch so if digging in it gets that snarl. Push that setting with an overdrive or boost and it can sing and be on the verge of feedback with a touch of octave up, drive it with a distortion is will feedback quite nicely and easy to control. It will cover Chris Squire to Jack Bruce to Lemmy just fine enough for me.

On guitar it has a lot of range from a nice clean to hard driven, with the brite off it feels and sounds a lot like a Plexi, close enough for me especially when paired with my FuzzNutz. With the Brite on it has that 80's grit that plays well with a nice fuzz or distortion or a great crunch rhythm sound. When I still played guitar [oh so long ago] my set up was a Plexi into a sealed 2x12 and a Fender Twin so I gotta have that rockin' sound occasionally.

Where would you place a More in this chain…

Buffered tuner -> Octave -> Comp -> Sushi Underground -> Dg Microtubes -> Chorus -> Di

Secondly, would you move the microtubes (set to medium drive) before the underground?

Personally would add the More just before the DI in this situation and keep the microtubes after the underground. Though I could be wrong. The More sounds elsewhere in the chain too. For one More I've had best results at end though. With 2 More's I've found they sound better with a (always on) pedal or two in between and not together.

I just got a used Particle Accelerator X version. I opened it up and says Version 0.1 11/2020. So this not as good UA? How much is the delta? So this will be only center negative compatible?

I do have an access to an Alembic FX-2 preamp that my friend owns, I'll do a proper comparison when I get a chance to drive up there

I think that would have been the first or second run of PAX that I ever built. Nothing wrong with it really, but it will be closer to an actual Alembic than UA is. The main difference between them is tonestack placement, PAX has it between the two gainstages, UA has it after the second.

Polarity it will accept will depend on whether or not it has had "the fix"; if it's stock wiring then it will accept either polarity, but may introduce noise if run with other high-current pedals.

I’ll try it there first.

Will this picture help to determine if it I can take center positve? My old Voodoo labs Iso 5 only has 400mA on the 9v and 12v section. I have some high current 1+ amp power supplies, but they center positive.

I am also not sure if the trim pot is set high. What is the recommended setting? I have to keep the volume to about 9 with the gain at noon so that I don't over drive my amp's input gain (set at 10)

If you want more gain, I would suggest putting some sort of drive pedal in front of the Slampegg, rather than a clean boost. Clean boost *may* get you the gain you want, but a drive pedal will almost definitely get the job done.

Don't know how much real estate is free on your board, but something like a Wampler Belle would definitely sound great. It absolutely rocks feeding into either of my Sushi pedals (yep, there's a second one now). Or a Fairfield Barbershop, too. Depends on how far away you are in terms of how much gain you want, I guess

Almost gave up on the Slampegg because by itself it just seemed like something I could eq but then I put a Spaceman Saturn VI front of it and it was magic.

Thanks,

Looks like stock wiring, you should be good for center positive.

Definitely leave the trimpot alone on that one, it's different than the ATTEN trimpots of the current models. This was back when the high voltage of each pedal was set manually after the build, so that trimpot sets the high voltage, and at 2:30 or 3:00 (which is where it is) you should be right around 230V, which is where I recommend leaving it.

Thank you Nathan @Sushi Box FX . Last question and I am probably going to DM you - if that is better. I got this used. The only thing that is bothersome is that the gain and volume knobs have a wiper sound when being adjusted, not a crackle per se like a dirty pot but more like a white noise. On the volume from 7 o'clock to 9 and the gain from 10 to 1 and then again from 3-4/5. I have moved them back and forth but I can't really clear the noise. Is this expected? They are sealed pots correct?, so I can't really clean with De-Oxit plus probably not a good idea in case I spill some on the PCB besides it will be a lot of work to access them.

I really like the pedal. Warms up the low mids, adds some sparkle with smooth high.I am a harmonics kind of guy and it helps bring those out easier, specially the uncommon and in-between ones. My amp is an Acoustic Image everything set to flat and HPF set to about 40 Hz

And I have not dug out the high current power supplies yet. Maybe that will clear out the pot noise. I also have some nice pre-amp tubes in case the one in it need replacement.

The crackly noise on the pots is unfortunately common, and I pulled my hair out trying to get rid of it, before canceling the design in favor of UA. I do use sealed pots, so what you're hearing is electrical noise, not due to dirty pots. There are some things that seem to help, like quiet, high-current power supplies, and low noise tubes. But sometimes it just lingers no matter what, that's how my personal PAX unit is.

Thank you. It is not a show stopper. It's my first SushiBox but not my first tube bass pre. (I have Demeter's and Fenders). The form factor is hard to beat and @scubaduba 's comparison with the Noble et all, comvinced me, of course I am 3 years late to the party. I sure will be getting a few more, but this is a good first experience with your creations.
