The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I don’t know why I’ve been running my gain so low on the OG Underground Accelerator (around 12ish or a tad less) but I cranked it up to 3 o’clock at church this week and it sounds amazing. I just have to bring the volume WAY down to like 2 o’clock or so. Maybe that’s why I originally had it lower.
Gain 1 o’clock Volume 11 o’clock for me with a passive P

I'm using active basses and I'm having NO issues with overdriving the input on the Elementary using a 12AU7 tube. Master Full up and Gain at 12:00 and I'm getting plenty of level and that's my "unity" volume with the pedal engaged or not.
When I set the eq where I want it and then set them to be "unity" gain, I have no problems stacking them and using the UA, Slampegg and Elem in tandem with each other. I'm getting no weird interactions between the pedals either like some have said.

I really need to get an au7 and try this.

With my passive bass I have the volume at 11 and the gain about the same. With my active basses, I have to dial the gain back to about 9 and set the volume for unity. This allows me to have a good, fat, clean tone and allows a just a bit of hair when I dig in.

What I really need to do is open my active basses and dial back the preamp gain so that the outputs of all of the basses are the same (or as close as I can get). Too many pedal setting changes need to be made to compensate when I change basses during a set (which I don't do very often).

"Hey Nathan, do you have any weird secret prototypes that you're planning to bring to NAMM that you haven't told us about yet?"

@Sushi Box FX if that is a tube chorus, sign me up.

Okay, so I'm still lurking around this thread to at least sort of keep up with all the goings on, and the Cascade has my attention as well.

If you're going down this path, I'll submit that I'm still watching for the day you dream up a tube envelope filter. Something like a Tube Zipper, but more pedalboard friendly.

Still keeping tabs on development of the Furthermore as well.

Setting the gain stage is certainly important but don't forget to account for the effect the eq has on the overall pedal level output. I set my EQ first and then adjust the pedal gain and master volume after that to get my unity setting. That seems to work best for me and I still have room to tweak the pedal eq somewhat without upsetting my overall unity gain.
Also, you have to account for the EQ settings on the bass. The higher the EQ is turned up, it adds to the total cumulative volume of the bass preamp's output which can overdrive some pedals (especially using 18V preamps). There is nothing wrong with dialing back the instrument volume and making up the gain with the pedal or at the amp itself if it is overloading the pedal input.
I use a china marker to mark where to set the volume control on my basses so when using multiple basses on a show, they all match output level wise.

Ever try using a dual input preamp like the radial bassbone? I use the Bassbone for two basses that have VERY different gains, and I never have to touch any pedals during gigs. Plus, switching is real quick. Lots to love about that pedal, and it lets both my basses hit my Space Heater in the same way.

No, I haven't. I know that Radial is a very established in the DI field, but I have this thing about not being about playing ampless gigs and I am a bit stuck in that I use a DI that contains the exact EQ section from the specific amp that I want on every gig. I have not been able to move past that point.

Call me old fashioned, but I want my amp.

I did some research on the Tube Zipper, I was looking at envelope filters and was intrigued by the fact that the envelope follower on Tube Zipper was so novel the designer was actually able to secure a patent for it, which is very uncommon in the world of guitar/bass pedals. The patent was withdrawn by the designer a while back so it's usable if I wanted to make something with it, but I spun a prototype of it and I wasn't in love with it.

So I did what I often do when I make something that I'm not that excited about:

I moved it into a DIY project, set to be released next month :P I've affectionately called it "Sweater Vest".

Furthermore is chugging along. I'm thinking 2024 is the year it gets finished.

I have active preamp with passive pickups and I don’t boost anything at the bass. I just liked the tone so much when I cranked that gain I decided it was worth it to just turn down master volume on the pedal as much as was needed. I may go back and bring the volume down on the EQ of my Darkglass Element some too though it’s not really cranked.

You can still use your amp with a bassbone. I used one of the first gen Bassbones for several years and seldom took advantage of the DI functionality. It was one of the first dual-channel preamps with separate tone controls that I ever learned about. It was also the pedal that got me into Cioks due to the whole 15v center-positive build. I eventually sold it because it was apparently constructed of the same plate steel used in bullet proof vest trauma plates. When I sold it I was able to cut the weight of my pedalboard by 60%.

Hang on a second! How did I miss the addition of that Bassdude PCB on your website??? That looks like a super cool build.

I keep forgetting that I have a compressor before the Elementary and I am using the output (post gain make-up) on the compressor to push the signal a bit for extra punch.

I've been meaning to try moving the Elementary in front of the compressor.
Doing the same with the fx loop of the stomp: +5db output (-5db input to come back to unity)

I gotcha. I am also an amp-only player. I've not yet tried to play samples, it just ain't my thing. I will say, the radial can be run flat on both channels and is *really* transparent, so if you don't want it to change your amp tone, it won't. Does that take some of the value away? Yeah, sure, but at under $200 used, you're still getting that ability to set two basses at unity gain and switch on the fly without touching any pedals. On top of that, it's a great clean DI. It also has a useable, nice LPF. Just throwing it out in case you get sick of tweaking levels like I did haha!

*Ampless. Not samples. Lol

The BassDude is very nice sounding, as the ownee of the prototype.
Nice!

I’m actually a fan of that style pre/tonestack. I’m seriously considering one, and the Nobelium Pre/DI. Too many great circuits. I don’t even have a firm idea of how I’d incorporate them but I absolutely want to build them.

I want to give a thumbs up to The Sushi Master for the excellent work on providing the DYI projects.
Material/parts list was very precise and even indicated where to source.
Build instructions are excellent and very detailed.
The finished product works great !
I used a "distressed brown" spray can finish (looks better in person)
