Count me in.

I'm a guitar player who plays bass. I play bass because everyone, especially myself, is "The Greatest Guitar Player In The World". Bands don't generally get formed by a cluster of "World's Greatest Guitar Players", so I decided to be mature, compromise, and play what no one else's ego allowed them to play.

As a result, I get a lot of, "You aren't a bassist, are you? You're a guitar player", from a lot of drummers, as if I'm trying to perpetrate some kind of profound fraud. Hey-at least someone in my band is trying to hold a group together so that they may become profitable, and not following his or her self-indulgence or foolish pride.

That being said, I now play bass almost all the time. It's just that it's going to take me a while to grow into the role after a quarter century of guitar playing.

Cut me some slack, will ya?

I want to update my status in this thread, as of Sunday, I sold my Schecter solo 6 with EMG's and bought a Darkglass B3K. I still have my MIM Fender Tele and may sell that soon also depending on finances.

I have found that I enjoy the groove and overall action of playing the bass more than guitar. I may sell the Tele to fund another Bergantino HD112.

Me too, man. Bass is definitely my favorite instrument but it's nice to pick up the guitar and noodle sometimes.

There's a very different philosophy between the two instruments. Once you get the bass player philosophy properly seated in your head, you'll be a 'real bass player'.

It seems that guitar players generally either don't notice the difference, or take longer to notice it than bass players.

The guitar player from my old band hadn't noticed the difference after we'd played together on and off for about twelve years. He finally got it after trying to have his roommate play bass on a song he'd written.

Patrick was a guitar player, too. But John didn't need another guitar player for the song he was trying to record. He played the parts he wanted for guitar. Then he showed Patrick what he basically wanted from the bass line and said "Now play that."

It didn't work out.

After several takes, he said "Never mind." and called me to come over. I required two takes because his dog started humping my leg halfway through the first and I was distracted/disturbed/grossed out.

After the demo was basically what he wanted in the first place, he said "I have to tell you that I never realized how hard a fairly simple part must be."

I explained that is was all about 'thinking like a bass player'.

It's a lot easier for a bass player to groove on rhythm guitar than a rhythm guitarist to groove on bass. I don't know why. But I blame it on philosophy.

I'd love to join this club. I've played guitar for most of my life, but a good friend of mine kind of forced me to take up bass to join his band. He basically wouldn't let me say no. It's been over three years now and I love playing bass, but I still knock around on the guitar quite a bit at home and at the occasional jam with friends.

I've still got more guitars and guitar amps than I do bass gear. Probably always will to be honest. Love my tele and strats through my Blues Jr with MI Audio Crunchbox!

I've decided to keep my electronic guitar so I'll take a number. I started out on bass, and I have to admit the number of guitar resources on the internet is kinda overwhelming. Anyone know of a few good websites with solid information?

Resources for guitar? Youtube has a number of channels with great lessons on them (martyzsongs, JustinSandercoeSongs, Mahalp (I think), just to name a few). What I would recommend is you avoid UG like the plague, unless you have/until you develop a strong BS filter. To be fair, I've discovered a lot of great music from there, but the community on that site... is out there to say the least.
