Seems like so many things are becoming "subscription based" for a low low price of $--- a month.
How about let me buy a car/truck and drive it myself without paying monthly for nanny options??
Don't think you'll ever phase out fossil fuels, at least not in my lifetime.
Reduce, yes...... eliminate, no. Too many day to day items/products/services rely on a fossil fuel of some sort...... even the EV's that are supposed to take over the world by 2030.
I'm all for clean air and in my 40 years as a professional auto mechanic I can tell you that today's ICE vehicles run far more clean and efficient than the carbureted slobs of years past. Cars getting 40 mpg are a reality today, while a 70's car was lucky to get 15 mpg.
Still, at the end of the day I don't see an EV fulfilling my needs...... plowing snow in the winter and towing trailers in the summer. The range just isn't there yet.
It's not about the cost.
My opinions of Elon Musk would not be appropriate fair for TB.
I agree completely.
Consider that everybody used horses for transportation until the early 20th century. The phase in of cars took only about 20 or 30 years, but horses never really went away.
I'm guessing that EVs will be a majority of vehicles on the road by 2045 or so but there will still be a significant percentage of ICE vehicles driving around in 2060 and even until 2100, although most of them will probably run on alcohol or other synthetic fuel.
I lived on the coast for nearly 20 years and suffered through multiple mandatory evacs. The worst of them took just under 14.5 hours to travel 140 miles. I couldn't imagine a situation like that in an EV world, just a complete disaster wreaked upon a complete disaster. No thanks, ever.

The capability is already built into every Tesla vehicle sold. Starting now, you get to use it for free for a month. After that, you have a choice to either pay a monthly subscription fee to continue to use it as long as you want, or choose not to use it and pay nothing.
What is there to complain about?
Tesla is giving away a month of free service to try it out, with absolutely zero cost or obligation of any kind to the vehicle owner.
I don't get it. Just about every vehicle sold anywhere comes with Sirius XM capability built in. If you want to use it, you pay the monthly subscription fee and it gets enabled. If you don't want to use it you pay nothing and it doesn't get enabled.
No one ever complains about GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Mazda, Volkswagen, Honda, Mercedes, Subaru, etc ......... for including XM capability in all of their vehicles.
Well, actually I do get it. But I can't state the real reason why without offending some people and risking running afoul of TB rules against politics.

I'll be almost 80 in 2045 and probably long gone by 2060.
Alcohol is another animal all in itself (other than the Jack Daniels I like
) ..... In that you need 2x the alcohol versus gasoline to get the same BTU content, and alcohol is very corrosive. We experimented with alcohol for our racing efforts and quickly switched back to gas..... It just wasn't worth it for us.
Won't be long before subscriptions are required to operate an electric car, or any car for that matter...... give it time, it will happen.
I tried Sirius XM for a bit and couldn't stand it. The few channels I actually liked had the DJ talking between every song, and that drove me nuts. I'm not going to pay for satellite radio so I can listen to Eddie Trunk babble about every rock star he's ever met.
I'll stick with free AM radio talk shows.
Folks complain about most anything they disagree with, including XM being in radios.
That rental we had I was crying about? It had it on the XM demo letting me know all the cool features if I subscribed now. It took me a hot minute to find the AM frequencies instead, but I did and the XM shut up finally.

I really dislike having to pay for satellite radio when they just regurgitate the same crap as every other FM channel does.
Commercial free? Not when you're listening to some idiot DJ babble incessantly about nothing. I can listen to AM talk radio for free.
Most of the time I listen to nothing other than the rattle of my diesel engine or the sweet sound of solid lifters.

Agree that alcohol has significant better properties.
It is corrosive, but that can be mitigated by using materials in the fuel line and other components that are designed to resist the corrosion.
Yes, it has inherently less energy content per volume, but because it's much more tolerant of combustion temperature than gasoline, you van bake up most of that difference by raising the compression ratio.
I seem to remember your vehicles were all naturally aspirated with carberators. Where alcohol really makes a difference is in fuel injected vehicles with turbochargers.
I had a Merkur XR4 with the Ford 2.3 L turbo four and Megasquirt EFI.
With gasoline I was running maximum of 18 psi of boost, but could run it at 25 psi with E85.
Of course, I had to stop and fill the 13 gallon fuel tank more often, but that's a minor inconvenience.
One advantage of EVs over ICE is that unordered to make more power you don't need to switch out a whole bunch of components. You just tell the computer to shove more current through the motor.
The only limitation is how fast the battery is drained and how much stress your vehicle structure can take before it twists into a pretzel. .

I'm at that spot now too buddy.
I went from full blast CD player to AM sports radio to now just the silence of the road and my truck engine. I like it.
Silence is powerful.

Actually my true preference would be a lifestyle change that eliminates the need for a second car that can be taken on long distance trips. Or any car. A friend of mine has already figured out that Uber is cheaper than owning a car.Plug in hybrids are part of the problem, not the solution - their time has passed.

If anyone is interested, Hertz is selling off all their Tesla models, so nows the time to get a very good deal on a used, but highly maintained car.
Getting to play loud Music in the car used to be my last refuge, now it only aggravates my tinnitus.
So, yes, Silence is The Way now.
