The Tesla and other Electric vehicle thread.....

The biggest mistake traditional analysts make is thinking that Tesla is a car company. It's an energy company, the cars are just the start...
Exactly! Its electric car division will only be a small part of future revenue in the years ahead. But in the meantime, it creates a cash flow for development and implementation of other energy projects. You are so right about many analysts just don't get it.

Enron was an energy company too. ;)

In my view, whatever is known to the public about Tesla is already figured into their stock price.
No, Enron was a scam company. Happened to be in the energy field, but their business was ripping off people from the start. Not a fair comparison at all.

Understood. I'm just pointing out that "energy company" doesn't anoint Tesla with any special magic. I just don't think there's likely to be any gaping hole in the public understanding of a public company unless they are doing something we don't know about. And it's widely known that they are already in the general purpose energy storage business.

Oh, I agree, the "special magic" is there, but it's not because it's an energy company. It's because it's a bunch of technical geniuses trying to save the planet. That last bit is what the bean counters and anal(c)ysts don't get. Don't know how they missed it, it's the company's founding principle. Overthrow fossil fuels, save the planet, get filthy rich while we're at it. :D

If Tesla is an energy company Kellogs are farmers. Granted big hoofy distributed batteries is one way of levelling out supply constraints on consumption but the big picture is we need a helluva lot of alternative generation to replace just what we use industrially.

Piling on with e-vehicles without knowing where the power is going to come from is disingenuous.

Sonething tells me anything invented by Tesla in the way of battery cell chemistry is not going to stay as their IP for very long. How you manage the battery with computers is another technology they are getting better and better at. Not so hard to invent a new wheel for that if you study what they did.

So I think Tesla are doing good work but being first to market isn't everything.

It's not like the actual energy companies are sitting still and will pack up drilling and digging just as soon as Tesla solves the energy deficit.

It's official now... all my kids (3) own a Tesla. My son Nick just picked his up today. Contact-less. He was told to show up and open Tesla app on his phone, start the air conditioner and turn on the emergency flashers. He looked at the row of Teslas, saw his and drove off. So cool! I guess I'm next, I need a SUC though. Waiting for the price to come down.

This sounds so much more pleasant than the standard car buying process. I bought a new Hyundai from a dealership last year, and the experience wasn't pleasant. When I was test driving other cars, the VW dealer wouldn't even tell me what the car cost. The sales manager just kept saying "we can talk about that later." We never did, because I walked.

I'm not a fan of Elon Musk for reasons I won't discuss here, but Tesla's buying process seems like one other car makers should at least try to emulate.

Tesla recently announced the range of the dual-motor AWD Model 3 has increased to 353 miles. The dual-motor AWD Model Y range has increased to 326 miles. The Model 3 also gets an interior design refresh.
..and blacked out trim and fresh wheels. But it's the range I would care about.

Now, I'm betting this increased range is due to new hw and not backfit to older models via OTA. But then again, it has happened before that I woke up to more range due to OTAs.. Pretty cool stuff.

I'm trying to hide my disappointment at not being chosen for the new FSD Beta. From what I've read it's the real deal, the first step into a new world.

I saw a Tesla broken down on the side of the road the other day. It was there for a couple of days, on day 2 a little generator showed up behind it, puttering away. Next time I saw it, it wasn't there any more. :)
