The 'This beer rules!' thread

Hey Marley, where do you live - I'm from Wilmington (now in San Diego, CA).

When I saw Yuengling I knew you had to be a good guy.

For me the Belgian's have it down, Affilgem Double and Chimay Blue are great, but ice cold Hoegarden....yum.

Shock Top is great as well, just tried it.

And McSorley's dark. But you can only get it at McSorley's in NYC. :(

I'm back. I picked up a bottle of Bellhaven's 'Wee Heavy' (from the land of Scots) and a bottle of Tree Brewings 'Spiced Mid-Winter Ale' (Canuck). Both are 'strong' beers at 6.5 %. I'm letting the Bellhaven warm up as I write. Who knew a Saturday night could be so much fun?

Picking a favorite beer is like picking a favorite pair of boobs. Why limit yourself?

I've had some amazing homebrews, including a couple that I made that I thought held their own against some of my favorites. But in terms of store beers, I could make quite a list.

Unibroue is one of my favorite breweries too. So is North Coast here in California along with Anchor.

As for individual beers, I'll just add the ones I've had most recently. Last night after Outside Lands (Beck, Radiohead, Manu Chao, Steel Pulse, Lyrics Born etc) we had some Alaskan Smoked Porter. Good stuff.

Here's what I'm drinking right now:

I agree about not limiting oneself in beer choice. North Coast beer is quite nice. I really enjoy the 'Old Rasputin'. I was in their brewery in Fort Bragg last summer and one of the employees pointed out that they had been 'under the influence' when they printed a batch of the bottle labels, as they had forgotten the 'i' in 'Russian'. Gotta love companies that test drive their products.

What's the best way to serve Samichlaus? I've seen reviews out the yin yang, but no real serving suggestions that I can find.

Easily the best Nut Brown Ale I've ever had.

Brewmaster Bo Belanger is a perfectionist who loves to make unusual, innovative beers as well as more traditional styles and his beers are always special.

Four of their currently available beers:

Nut Brown Ale
Don't be intimidated by the rich walnut color. Our "flagship" brew, it's a very social drink and goes great with all types of food.

Honey Pils
This golden beer is refreshing, boldly crisp, full bodied, yet not overwhelmingly bitter.

Herbal Cream Ale
Innovation is the hallmark of truly our most unique product. This beer alivens and refreshes your tastebuds.

Rhoades Scholar Stout
Our only named beer to date. Its' honorary status is in tribute to its' designer, Allen Rhoades, a fellow brewer who captured a blue ribbon at the Western Washington State Fair when it was entered as a homebrew.

High gravity beers like Samiclaus are enhanced by serving at cool, but not cold, temperatures (50-60 F) so that the flavor is more pronounced and in smaller glasses such as these:

But most quality beer drinkers aren't so finicky about serving details and the homebrewer's admonition to "Relax. Don't Worry. Have a homebrew." is the best advice to those who spend too much time worrying about such stuff. ;)
