The 'This beer rules!' thread

High gravity beers like Samiclaus are enhanced by serving at cool, but not cold, temperatures (50-60 F) so that the flavor is more pronounced and in smaller glasses such as these:

But most quality beer drinkers aren't so finicky about serving details and the homebrewer's admonition to "Relax. Don't Worry. Have a homebrew." is the best advice to those who spend too much time worrying about such stuff. ;)

It's not that I'm finicky, just really trying to tap into the flavor.....and not make the same mistake I made trying to pour a Belgian blonde into a pint glass. ;)

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout. mmm tasty goodness.

Also the Woodstock Inn and Station Brewery in Woodstock, NH has a killer Maple Porter. (seasonal spring only). The band I used to play with used to gig there a lot. It was always nice because we got free food, free lodging and they had good beer. Their Oatmeal Stout is good too. But Maple Porter was my favorite.

Another treat is the Sam Adams Triple Bock. If you ever get a chance to try it definitely do. It's more like a cognac or a brandy. Real tasty. Hard to find outside of MA / NE area. Actually you can even buy it in NH due to the high alcohol content.

You can read a bit about it here. Be warned that it's a beer that you will either love or hate. I personally like it. http://www.thebrewsite.com/2005/03/19/samuel_adams_triple_bock.php

ok, i am not a beer drinker nor have i ever been. just never liked the taste of any of the ones i tried. at one point in my life, i was a huge "brown liquor" drinker. got out of control, fifth a day blah blah blah had to quit. although a nip of scotch everyonce in a while.......maybe 2-3 times a year.

anywho, my dad was just in the hospital almost died, brothers came in and the bought beer one night for dinner. nerves shot, so i had one.

dosequis amber-sorry for the spelling. any other beers that tast close to that. that was a good beer. i really enjoyed it.

If you encounter a beer that is hard to put down. Just drop a shot of whiskey in it. Turns any piss beer around.

Or just slam 4 or 5 shots of whiskey... it can even make warm beer taste less obviously warm. Gotta be careful in sloppy party zones, though. I've seen the 5 shot whiskey treatment cause some beer with an unidentified growth in it to get sipped on. It was immediately evacuated, though, and added a very bold aroma to the place.

That is just nasty. I have seen some bad science experiments. Maggots coming out of the sink was one of the worst though. Thankfully it was not my place. It was like my friends were try to condemn then place.

I've been on an IPA kick, so here's what I've been diggin' lately.

1. O'dell's IPA
2. Great Divide Herculese Double IPA
3. Boulevard Smokestack Double Wide IPA
4. Upstream (local brew pub) oak aged IPA

Belgian brews
1. LaMoneusse (sp? sorry, not at home) Saison
2. Tripel Karmaliet
3. Duvel (although I find it a tad overcarbonated, any suggestions?)
4. Nostradamus!!!!!!!!!

Got a thing for IPAs, uh? I love the upstream as well. Their firehouse ESB (IIRC) is great and O! Gold is the only light beer I like. Also their house smoked gouda soup is great :)

To me, however, it's all about this:

I've had several of those over the years and they can be wonderful when drank within a reasonable time of their release.

DO NOT take the advice to age them for years to "improve" the flavor. Allowing this beer to sit in the bottle for more than a few years will turn it into undrinkable goo that tastes like soy sauce. There are many reviews of this beer being ruined by aging and I can personally attest to this.
