The Tiny House Movement

I wonder if it would fit inside an 8 X 10 cab?:hiding:

I actually get the principle. I live in a 1200 sq. Ft house, my older neighbors (who brought when the neighborhood was built) raised 4 kids in a house with the identical floor plan no problem.Back when it was built (1957) it was the suburban dream house. Now people think they need twice that much house to start. We do have to much stuff. Each kid doesn't need a bedroom and a play room. We don't have to throw large parties in our house, we can rent a hall.:rollno:

I live in a house about 700 square feet.

I could go smaller (and definately more energy efficient).

All I need is a studio space - 8 ft by 12 ft.

Living area with sleeping loft - 12 ft by 18 ft.

Kitchen- 6 ft by 6 ft

Shower room - 4 ft by 4 ft

Toilet - 4 ft by 4 ft

Total = 380 square feet.

It would have to be well designed though.

makes me wanna run anyway to northern vt. i live in a 1600 sq ft house. i bought it for my family of four. now we are three. i would really like to have a smaller place, one story. in eight years my kids will no longer be dependents. i dream of an efficient little place in the woods.... ahhh.....
:smug:

I would be happy in a tiny house. No one of the refrigerator box ones, but one of the bigger tiny houses. 700 sq ft would be more than enough for me. All I ever wanted was a tiny house. The "movement" isn't new. It's only now starting to get more attention though.

there are plently of "green" composite material homes that echo this movement with spartan ikea-mindsets and smart use of space. I don't at this point think I could pull it off with my two kids, but someday...I applaud it. My current home is 1310 sq. ft. The entire upstairs I've seen VERY seldom in the past 4 months/ That knocks me down a solid 400-500 sq. ft or so....someday, I won't missit at all, much like now.

Im not sure if I have done something wrong here, but using google to convert square meters to square feet, it seems you guys are used to much smaller houses?

I mean, 1200 square feet comes up as just over 110 square metres, thats a pretty bloody small house. Average house size here in Australia is well over 200 from what I understand.

There are some housing developments near where I live (expensive ones mind you) that demand a minimum size of 300 or even 350 square metres, thats over 3500 square feet.

I personally would like to live in a tiny house, not too small, but just a couple of rooms, a kitchen that opens into a living room, a bedroom and a bathroom. Here is an amazing diagram I made using keyboard characters:

I could quite easily deal with that on my own, or with a partner (Providing she could deal with it :D:D).
