Cherie, I'm finishing up a doozy of an event that happened recently.. I had to wait because it was definitely on the edge..
Well....
Here's some interesting news..
Here is a drummer that I worked with in England. Someone just asked me to join a group to "free him." I thought to myself; "what the hell has he done?" The last time I saw the guy was at a rehearsal in London. He looked disheveled and his hair was uncombed and nappy. I knew he had just gotten divorced, and that his wife/manager had taken him to the cleaners. I had heard some stories about him doing drugs, and then I saw him at the borderline off tottenham court road in London. I think he was playing with Ian Hunter's daughter. It was my opinion that they were (ahem..) doing "things or on something." I didn't talk to him long. If anyone knows anything about drug addicts, you know that they behave in a cliquish sort of manner. If you're not into the stuff they're into, you're an outsider.. This behavior applies to success in the biz as well. You're hired because you're "safe" to hire. Steve told me once that "I've seen people get paid with some money and sometimes drugs. In fact, sometimes the money isn't the reason to take a gig. Sex, or drugs are sometimes a better payment." I'm thinking of a particular boy band was implied with that statement, but who knows...
I recorded with Steve on a few projects, the last was a remake of Wild Thing with the original singer of the Troggs. (Reg Presley? I could have the name wrong..)
Well, here's an update on his "situation."

Personally, I think jail is the best place for him. He was seriously screwing up, I'm amazed he isn't dead. He was a nice guy, typically selfish in a typical artist way,(C'mon... You guys KNOW what I mean! I'm not knocking it, or judging it.. Just recognizing it.) I feel the same way about him that I do about John Wilde..

"Steve was living down my way and we played togerther a lot.i got him work as his rep was getting bad and i wanted to help.we became good mates.he had a bad coke prob and lived in folkstone not a good place.every penny he got went on it.we all tryed to help but coke had him.he began to f*** up on my gigs and cost me work so we fell out.next thing i konw he was arrested.he tryed to rob a bank with a drum stand rapped in paper and said he had a bomb.he left the bank and tryed to jack a car but it had 2 of duty girkers in it.he made a getaway on push bike but they got him.he got 4 years.i heard he owed the albainians money so he was in deep ****.make or break must of been his plan...four years is a lot as he was in a bad way..he is in maidstone.Steve Tate is his real name..we must catch up soon...."
I've had many opportunities to party hard, but I was never interested in spending my money on drugs. I do plan on being addicted to shopping for clothes at some point!!

Ya know, when this stuff was going on, everybody on the scene knew and talked about it... Privately. I thought about the previous posts, because I never would mention this kind of topic if it was still a sensitive issue. Since it's beyond being kept on the hush now, I figure these things do happen.. and stranger things still... So, here is something that makes me think and reflect. All of you younger players, beware of what the consequences are in who you know. I can testify, some people will do anything if pressure is applied. I know, and I've seen it. It would be easy to develop a way of numbing oneself, but it doesn't really fix anything now does it? It just prolongs finding a solution.
But, I'd be the first to admit a break from reality would sometimes be preferable.

That's a very, very sad story. And, yes, a cautionary tale. People hard in the grip of drugs like cocaine, etc., will do desperate things. They'll thieve from friends, they'll theive from family...it doesn't stop until they do.
Then there's other things. Crazy things. Unbalanced things.
I turned down a project, recently. I really don't have time for it anyway...I have two projects already.
The guy is doing some bat-**** crazy things. Can't say more, but...I really would rather just stay clear of the whole mess until the parties actually involved sort it out. And then some.

Is it a crime for a particular group to feel a camaraderie regarding their instrument of choice? It's not wrong if you keep your ego in perspective. As I've said before "I'm no longer in love with playing the bass, but I am in love with music."
No one said that it was any more special than other instrument, and there are other websites that promote a multitude of varying instrumentation. This is a "bass oriented" site..
So be open minded! Personally, I'm just now starting to enjoy music again, not just "the bass."

What about DrayMiles? He came in and posted his two Tour From Hell threads and then was gone. Maybe not as well known as the others mentioned here but many people followed those threads, especially the first one.
An update would be great.

I've spent the better part of my free time the last couple of days reading part 1 and part 2. What a great story, and dray should be extremely proud of yourself for where you are heading!
Without stepping too far out of line, it is said that pride *always* comes before the fall, which you alluded to in one of your posts, and the humility that you have gained will pay off greatly, and I am excited to hear any updates!

I'm still around.. I didn't think anybody noticed, so i've been kinda slack...
I guess I should let you guys know, that I went to Nashville to inspect the scene, and I was talking to the driver/drummer for rascal flatts.. He shared his opinion about Nashville, it was all positive..

Yep, still got the warwicks..I'm still in school, and I'm not playing out.. although I did purchase "the repository of melodic scales and patterns." I'm starting to get the itch to play again and I'm looking..
P.S. I have a story about a bass shop in the south and the owner is an inspiration to bassists everywhere. Especially if you know what he overcame. I'll check back in a few days to see if you guys want to hear about somebody that overcame waaaaayy more than even I could comprehend!
There's a long thread on here which began by discussing the bassist for rascal flatts and how he was not allowed to play on the first albums and then went on to discuss road bassists vs studio bassists and the Nashville scene. Glad you found it a positive experience!
